BROWN WIZARD TRIUMPHS » Easily Romps Away with the Running of Woodstock Plate. ♦ Seagram Stables Young Kitty aMkes Auspicious Debut for the Tear in Annexing the Connaught Cap in Impressive Style. ♦ TORONTO, Ont. May 20.— E. F. Sanfords Brown Wizard, a three-year-old by Brown Prince II — Prodigy, was winner of todays feature race at Woodbine Park, when he galloped home an easy winner three lengths in front of R. T. Wilsons African in the running of the Woodstock Plate. This famous old Canadian turf race has always attracted a good field and todays running marked the forty-third of this stake. There were seven starters. Harvard being withdrawn and French Lass added. African and Black Diamond were coupled as the Wilson-Salmon entry and went to the post odds-on favorite. The field was promptly dispatched to a good start and Brown Wizard, which began from the inside position, quickly assumed the lead. Black Diamond dropped into second position as they swung into the back stretch. Mann took the leader in hand and rated him under slight restraint. Passing the half-mile post he began to draw away. African, which had begun slowly, was gradually improving his pcition, but at the turn out of the back stretch, was still far out of it. Coming into the home stretch, he was closing strong and for a time it looked as if he might overhaul Brown Wizard. Mann had too much in reserve, however, and when he roused the latter up a bit at the sixteenth post, the Sanford racer again drew away. Black Diamond tired badly in the stretch run and was a distant third, beaten six lengths for second place. The Ontario Jockey Club added ,000 to the stake and it had a net value of ,840 to the winner. In the Connaught Cup, an added feature, the Seagram stables Young Kitty scored in runaway fashion. She looked in splendid condition going to the post and it is possible that she may duplicate her wonderful record of last year, when she won her last seven starts. Edward Seagram was presented with the gold challenge cup, which went to the owner of the winner, by Lord Willingdon and a replica of the cup by Lady Willingdon. Racing this afternoon was held under most favorable conditions and a large gathering for Monday turned out. Continued on twentieth page. BROWN WIZARD TRIUMPHS Continued from first page. It was a crisp, cool spring afternoon, with bright sunshine overhead and a fast track under foot. Well-balanced fields went to the post in a majority of the races and upsets were in order, several of the favorites being bowled over. Federal Reserve, the son of Dominant, which races for the Eastland Farm Stable, demonstrated that one thing he did not lack was gameness. He fought It out through the home stretch with Cliftons Maid and Flashing to win the opening race and outstayed Cliftons Maid by a nose. There were seven starters in this race and the Hatch Stable furnished the favorite in Queen Gorin, which went to the post well backed. When it came to the running Queen Gorin lacked speed and at no time during the race was she even prominent and at the finish was last but one. Federal Reserve was the one to set the pace and in the early stages opened up a lead of a length on his opponents. At the head of the stretch Cliftons Maid and Flashing challenged him. All were under punishment and it resolved itself into which was the gamest. At the end Cliftons Maid, which was next to the inner rail, made a desperate effort to head the leader, but just failed to make it and was beaten by the smallest of margins. Flashing was a tiring third, beaten two lengths and a half for second place. The winner paid the handsome dividend of 9.25 in the mutuels. The Helter Skelter Steeplechase resulted in an easy victory for W. J. Salmons Gun Boat. Ridden by E. Albright and following the pace to the first turn of the. field. Gun Boat moved up to assume an easy lead after taking the twelfth jump to win going away at the end by fifteen lengths. It was a hard struggle between Vocalian and Beverwyck for second place. These two fought it out all of the last quarter and at the end they were necks apart and staggering. Bombino was pulled up and Black Pepper lost his rider at the second fence. The remainder of the field finished the course without mishap. Beverwyck started to make a runaway affair of the race and went into a five lengths lead the first time around. The others were all under restraint. The field was deep and heavy and it surely took a stout hearted horse to negotiate the course. The Seagram colors were seen in front for the first time at the meeting when Young Kitty beat Viscose by a head in the running of the Connaught Cup. The conditions of this race called for three-year-olds and over, the bona fide property of Canadian owners resident in Canada. It was a handicap at one mile and a sixteenth. In her only two starts this spring Patricia J. was returned a winner on both occasions. In one of her races she beat that good colt Ben Marshall. Patricia J. lacked speed was far back the entire way and finished last. The race resulted in a good contest. Maiben hustling Young Kitty to the front when the start came and made all of her own pace. In the stretch run she was inclined to tire and at the end she was forced to stand a drive to stall off Viscose. The latter, lame going to the post, was last but one to the stretch turn, where Schaefer took him to the outside. In the final eighth Viscose closed with determination and was gradually wearing down the Seagram filly. He would have beaten her in a few more strides.
