CHICAGO AT HIS BEST — i — • F. M. Grabners Gelding Triumphs in Silver Lake Farm Purse. ♦ Odds-On Favorite Runs One Mile in 1:39% Over Slow Track at Churchill Downs. » LOUISVILLE. Ky., May 20.— Racing was resumed this afternoon at Churchill Downs under conditions far removed from the hubbub and frenzy of Saturday, when the old plant harbored a capacity crowd, attracted from near and far for the Kentucky Derby. Today there was no Derby and no capacity throng, the attractive Monday offering being decided before a large patronage for the day, but one that appeared lost in the massive stands as compared with the flood of humanity that taxed the structures only forty-eight hours before. There was a threatening sky and unseasonably chilly weather, but racing conditions were much improved over those of Saturday, the track having dried out considerable. But for the damp atmosphere it probably would have reached a fast condition, but as it was it failed to reach its best and the program was decided over a slightly dull course. The Silver Lake Farm Purse over one mile, the feature, resulted in a victory for F. M. Grabners Chicago, which raced the distance in 1 :39% to defeat William Ma-hers Fairy Maiden by a neck. Six lengths back the frequent offending Flat Iron, on which Carl Meyer rode a poor race, saved third from Disturb, while Boo. which completed the field, was eliminated when he refused to start with the others. ODDS-ON FAVORITE. Chicago, after racing under restraint for five-eighths, passed Flat Iron and Disturb and took the lead, which he held against the late stretch challenge of Fairy Maiden, the latter gaining on him steadily while racing wide in the last quarter. Chicago, ridden by Frank Coltiletti, was backed into odds — on favoritism. J. J. Coughlin provided his first winner at the meeting when the two-year-old filly Lillian Tobin scored at long odds and in a driving finish over Helen King in the opening race for maidens of her age. Minah Louise was third, thus effecting a complete route of the choices. Lillian Tobin sprinted into the lead on the stretch turn and, going gamely, outstayed the persistent Helen King to win by a neck. Helen King finished well in advance of Minah Louise and the latter had a good margin over Mabel Basil for third. Banner Bright, the favorite, was outrun. Silverdale, well backed, registered without being fully extended, and decisively, over Cash Play, Frank Horan and seven other top grade three-year-old platers in the second race. Under a nice ride by L. Jones, the winner was in front from the close of the first five-sixteenths of the six and a half furlongs and reached the finish well in hand four lengths in advance of Cash Play. The latter, which headed Frank Horan in the final strides for second place, ran away about three-sixteenths of a mile before the start and this might have prevented him from giving the winner a stronger argument. DOUBLE FOR MEETING. Fire Under, in the Harned Brothers stable, became a double winner at the meeting when L. Jones hustled him home for his second winning mount of the afternoon in the third race. Fire Unders victory came in a spectacular finish, with Patuxant, which the winner nosed out after a long drive. Third place went to Stars and Stripes, which tired in the final drive, after having led for almost a mile. The fourth race, for two-year-olds under selling conditions, witnessed an easy victory for Desha Breckinridges Fair Rosalind, which was grouped in the field. W. Crump had the winner in front from the first eighth, and, maintaining a pace too fast for her rivals, she led throughout and showed the way to Miss Peggy by three lengths at the end of the five-eighths. Surcease, in leading Aline Bensinger, the favorite, by a nose for third, was four lengths back of Miss Peggy. _A
