KENTUCKY DERBY WINNER — ♦ Clyde Van Dusen Safely Arrives at Covington Track. ♦ Ready for Engagement in Latonia Derby — African Works Well— Ten Most Likely Starters. ♦ LATONIA, Ky.. June 20.— Clyde Van Dusen, winner of the Kentucky Derby, was unloaded at Latonia this morning after a fatiguing yet uneventful trip from Washington Park, Chicago. His next important engagement will be in the Latonia Derby Saturday. The gelding came in personal charge of Clyde Van Dusen, his trainer and developer, and was accompanied by a stable pony and several horses shipped from the Homewood track to be turned out at Kentucky farms. Refreshing quarters were in readiness in the stable used by a division of trainer Van Dusens string during the meeting and the Kentucky Derby winner was at ease only a few minutes after the express car in which he made the trip unloaded at 10 oclock. Trainer Van Dusen announced that the gelding apparently suffered no ill effects from his race in the American Derby last Saturday and is extremely confident that he will make amends for that defeat by accounting for the local fixture. By a victory here, the three-year-old can earn, besides the winners share, an additional ,000, which is provided if the winner is the Kentucky Derby-victor. This additional reward has been offered for the past decade, yet none of the Kentucky Derby winners which have contested the local stake have succeeded in carrying it off. Maurice Welsh, who is in charge of Richard T. Wilsons African, which arrived Wednesday from Washington Park, where he finished third in the American Derby, this morning had an easy gallop over the Derby route. The colt, sent over the long course at a slow pace, was timed in 2 :49% for the one mile and a half. The track was good. He was caught in :28% for the quarter; :57 for a half ; 1 :2o% for three-quarters ; 1 :52*i for the Continued on twenty-fourth page. Thomas Healy, chief trainer of the Wilson horses, will not make a trip from the East to handle the colt. His assignment will be taken over by one of Mr. Henleys friends among the trainers holding Kentucky licenses. Trainer Charles Van Meter put Desha Breckinridges Lord Braedalbane through his final hard preparation for the race. The three-year-old was sent to the track in company with the older Broadside and they worked one mile and a quarter on even terms and well in hand in 2 :10%. The fractions were :2oVs. :50%. 1:16% and 1:43. Track conditions will determine Hal Price Ileadleys starter for the race, according to Walter Taylor, youthful trainer of the big Headley stable. Amsterdam has the preference if the track is fast, while Paraphrase is likely to carry the stables silks if the footing is muddy or heavy.
