HOPES OF RANCOCAS STABLE 1 E Sinclair Establishment Has Five S Eligibles for Kentucky Derby. Grnttan Appears "Most Formidable of tlic Group ItcvieAV of Tliclr Itccords as Two-yenr-olds. ri The Rancocas Stable, one of the countrys b be largest, -which several years ago sent the tl great Zev to Kentucky to win the Derby, 5 5 though represented in the nominations list v this year by five candidates, has really only S one whose record has stamped him as being of Derby caliber. This is G rattan, winner of b the Hudson and Great American Stakes in q 1920. From this winner of more than 5,000 in his several juvenile engagements, the Rancocas group graduates downward to a I lowly maiden which Avon but 5100 as a two- I year-old. A review of the records of the Rancocas 1 eligibles follows: Git ATT AX ti By Lucullltc Durbar, owned by Itancocas t Stable. s JUVF.NILK RECORD: Starts. 1st. 2d. 3d. Unp. "Won. v 11 4 1 1 5 5,050 G rat tan accounted for two of the major Aqueduct stakes for juveniles, the Hudson J and Great American. He demonstrated very forcibly in these two stakes how much he had improved, for behind him in both of them were several high-class two-year-olds that had previously beaten him. He also j displayed a consistency in running time, finishing out thq five furlongs in each instance in one minute flat. The Hudson and Great . American were successive starts for Grattan. In the former he won 7,000 for his stable and in the latter the winning share was ?15,GG0. Grattan began his juvenile season comparatively early, April 2G, and he won his J first race, a dash for maiden colts and geldings, which included, among other first-time starters, Peto. Grattan, coupled with Shan J Tung, was closing favorite at 11 to 20. He won by a length and a half, easing up. His second appearance was in the Youthful Stakes, in which he finished fifth to Sar-azen II., Caruso, Crack Brigade and Tom- -bereau. His first start at Belmont Park was in the Keene Memorial Stakes, in which he . carried 122 pounds and finished sixth to Mokatam, Crack Brigade, Caruso, Swatter and Prometheus. He then defeated a field which included W. TL Coes Caruso, the favorite. The son of Lucullite was beaten off in both the Juvenile and National Stallion Stakes. The Juvenile was won by Black Alajesty, and included Crack Brigade, Frum-per, Sarazen II. and Prometheus. The Na- j tional Stallion was won by Crazy Coot, and the field included Keep On, Cymbal and Black Majesty. Grattan finished behind all of these, but was closing well. He was much more fortunate at Aqueduct. In his first start there he carried 120 pounds and finished second to Prometheus, beaten " by two lengths. This field included Sarazen II. and others of less prominence. In the Hudson he had up only 115 pounds and was able to win handily, by two lengths, from Erin and Crack Brigade. Others he led were Black Majesty. Peto and Crazy Coot He picked up ten pounds for the Great American, carrying 125, and won by a head : from Prometheus. Others in this field were Sarazen II., Frumper, Crack Brigade, Black Majesty, and Grattan passed most of these in moving up as the group approached the I stretch. Moving to Saratoga, Grattan went in the Saratoga Special, along with Whichone, Pansy Walker and Sarazen II. All of these beat him. He ran a good race, but tired near the end. In his last start of the year, the Sanford Stakes, he was third to Hi-Jack and Polygamous, beaten a length and a half after making a determined bid in the stretch, tiring in the last sixteenth. He carried 125 pounds, top weight of all except Black Majesty, which finished farther back. J-A1IOR By Lueullite rcrscplione, owned by Jtan-coeas Stable. JUTE XI LE RECORD: Starts. 1st. 2d. 3d. Unp. Won. 12 3 3 3 3 1,165 Tardiness in getting away after the barrier was sprung cost Lahor more than one race, among the short dashes in which he engaged as a two-year-old, and it may be that in him the Rancocas Stable has a route racer of more than average, caliber. In nearly all his races Labor was going much better at the end than at any other stage. This was true of him even in his first start, which was at Bowie early in April. The race was won by Swatter, and Lahor was fifth, ginishing gamely. He made another good finish in his second race, at Havre de Grace, but was unplaced. In his first start at "Washington Park, on a heavy track, he came with a rush, from far out of contention, to be second, though not a close one, to West Park. He graduated at Washington Park, defeating Sir Argo by a head, wearing down Sir Argo in the last eighth after a slow start. After finishing third to Friar Bell and Lady Buyer, he won another race from practically the same company, catching Lady Buyer in the last seventy .yards. In his last at Washington Park he finished third to Lost Agnes and Lucile and was going fastest of all at the end. He met still better company at Arlington Park and was third to Dedicate and Chelys in a contest in which the track record for five and a half furlongs was equaled. On a heavy track, at Arlington, lie was outrun in the early part, but got up courageously and was beaten only a nose by Wild Waters. In another stride he would probably have Avon. He Avas plainly best in another race there in which he was beaten a nose by Take Off. Swerving in the stretch cost him this race. Lahor didnt fare well in his only HaAV-thdrne .race, in which he Aves beaten, on a fast track, by Rich Widow, Lightning, Jones, Tombereau, Michigan Boy and Gee "yiiiz. At Lincolni-Fields, Avherehe jjfinished his juvenile season, he Avon by a head from Lightning- Jones after being forced back in- the first. quarter. t.. : KAI FENG By Kai-Sang Dauntless, owned by Rail-cocas Stable. The race Avas Avon by Try Too, and Limbus Avas in the rear division, but he did manage to beat out two that are noAV Derby candidates, Lightning Jones and Sydney. v Some of those in front of him, in addition to the winner, Ave re Morsel, Line Rider and Flying Fast. His first race he Avon as a long shot, and it Avas a very creditable effort. After losing the lead he came again and led by a length. KIANG By Kul-Snng Laniorcc, owned by Rancocas .Stable. JUVENILE RECORD: Starts. 1st. 2d. 3d. Unp. Won. 2 0 0 11 00 This colt Avent into his second season as a maiden. Like Limbus, another Rancocas 1 eligible, ho made only two starts as a jinc-nile. In his first, at Jamaica, on a muddy track, he finished far back. In .his second, at Belmont Park, on a fast track, he finished third to Raccoon and Black Majesty, when both of these Avere, radng for the first time.
