WOODY LONGS TRIAL PURSE Sporting Blood Colt Captures ,500 Feature of Today s Wheeling Races. WHEELING, W. Va., April 23. A. J. Bedells Sporting Blood colt Woody Long led his field in the ,500 Preliminary Trial Purse, which was the most valuable and the outstanding race on todays card. Baltimore, which had been a rank outsider in his races here, was second, and Wacket finished third. The distance was a mile and seventy yards. After disposing of Buchon, Dr. Hickman had enough in reserve to withstand the final challenge of Lenny during the stretch test of the third dash. Hoatzin came fast on the inside during the run home and finished a creditable third, as Buchon stopped badly. The veteran rider, Bill Taylor, sent The Doctor into the lead after going half the trip in the fourth race, and he continued to increase his advantage all during the stretch run. Arrow Hawk came again on the inside in the last furlong and outlasted Rock Queen for the second honors. The latter displayed early speed but tired. Samuel Ross, Washington, D. C, sportsman, scored his first score of the present meeting when Wee Marjie accounted for the opening number which marked her maiden victory. The Scotch Broom filly displayed keen speed throughout and retained a comfortable lead throughout the stretch. Red Likker and Getgoin followed the leader closely all the way, with the latter in close quarters next the inner rail. A pair of twins by Chatterton Delft made their debut here but displayed scant speed. Toltec led Starry Dawn and Royal Bells a merry clip at all stages of the second event in this order and won with much to spare. This trio dominated the running throughout. Two of the oldest horses running here raced down in front in the fifth race when Jibe, eight years old, led Edward Gray, ten years old, by a very narrow margin. Edward Gray held the lead, after passing Surface, almost to the finish line. Reigh Shot closed fast and was third.
