MONTANARO IN FINE FETTLE Gallops Mile and Eighth in 1 :53 y5 Over Fast Lexington Track. Goes East Today Willi Mike Hall to Start In Dixie Handicap Uncle Matt Negotiates a Fast Mile. LEXINGTON, Ky., April 23. Speed was the keynote of trials over the fast Kentucky Association track this morning and perusal of the numerous swift rehearsals revealed some of the fastest workouts of the season to dale. Kentucky Derby candidates came through with some of the best works, but were required to share the limelight with older racers, as several of the latter whizzed along in near sensational fashion. H. C. Hatchs Montanaro, the five-year-old gelding, and among the outstanding handicap prospects of the western turf, clicked off the outstanding work when he ran one and one-eighth miles in 1:53, handily. It was a move which measured right up to that of J. N. Camdens Sydney over the same route a day before, and left little doubt that trainer Lloyd Gentry has the Canadian-equine in the best possible condition for next Mondays renewal at Pimlico of the Dixie Handicap. Under the guidance of jockey R. Townrow, the fleet and courageous gelding went the quarter in :24; half mile in :48; three-quarters in 1:14 and the mile in 1:40. e Under the present plans, Montanaro leaves Thursday in the same car with R. SI. Eastmans Mike Hall, H. P. Headleys Alcibiades and one or two others of the Headley performers, for Pimlico. Mike Hall, decisively defeated by Montanaro on the opening day of the local meeting, also will be a starter in the Dixie, while Alcibiades may make her appearance in the 150,000 added Preaknes3 Stakes. TANNERY IN FORM. Edward F. Prichards Tannery, J. R. Dev-ereaux Uncle Matt and H. P. Headleys Ante Bellum contributed the best moves by Derby hopefuls. The former and Ante Bellum each worked over three-quarters, while Uncle Matt was indulged with a testing mile and came through most impressively when he traversed the distance in 1":41. This son of King Gorin and Frances M. has been working at a fast clip consistently for several weeks and trainer Tom Harmon expects him to make amends for his defeat under colors several days ago, when given opportunity over a distance of ground. He was timed in :24 for the first quarter and. after going a half mile in :4S, completed three-quarters in 1 :14. Tannery had art easy assignment and, rated along under strong reserve, negotiated three-quarters in 1:14, while Ante Bellum put far more effort in his drill, with the result that he sped over the same distance in 1:13. He finished out under strong pressure and extreme early speed featured his workout. Time for the first quarter was :22, and he added another eighth in :34, then finished a half mile in :47 and five-eighths in 1 :00. This son of Supremus is gifted with exceptional speed and, while he may not relish such a distance as the one and one-quarter miles . of the Derby, he is certain to prove a top-notcher hmong the sprinters.. Tannery, hard held from start to finish in his light work, went the quarter in :24, and half mile in :50. Trainer Jack Baker has "him in satisfactory condition. for a resumption of racing and he may make his bow as a threer-year-old on Saturday. CURRENT WORKS WELL. Current, R. S. Clarks good filly and an eligible for a number of the outstanding features for older horses to be run in Kentucky and Illinois and also trained by Baker, appeared at her best as she breezed a mile in 1:43 ; the quarter in :27, half mile in :51, and three-quarters in 1 :1G. John V. Pons three-year-old filly Kincsen, which leaves Thursday for Wheeling, where she will contest in the ,000 Golden Jubilee Stakes on Saturday, exhibited a readiness for that engagement over one and one-sixteenth miles, when she breezed a mile in 1:43. The daughter of Cudgel was caught in :25 for the quarter ; in :50 for the half mile, and in 1 :17 for the three-quarters. She is slated to make the trip to West Virginia in company with H. P. Headleys Dark Entry, another for the Golden Jubilee, and, barring a change of plans, they get away Thursday. Dark Entry was under colors for the Ashland Country Club Purse here this afternoon.
