FEATURE FIELD SMALL Only Five Starters in Shed Row Nes Purse Rich Widow Scores in Main Attraction at Louisville Sta blemate Finishes Third LOUISVILLE Ky May 20 The first dou ¬ ble win of the meeting featured this after ¬ noons Churchill Downs racing and it fell to Willie Crump former jockey and in his first season as a trainer to provide the pair of winners in Stock Market and Rich Widow among the horses he is training for J W Parrish Midway Ky owner and breeder Incidentally it was the third win in two days for the Parrish silks and this showing was augmented by the placing third of the stables Dr Parrish in the race which witnessed Rich Widows success successThis This last triumph was scored in the best race of the afternoon and the capable daugh ¬ ter of Star Master and Zulcika raced to the end of the threequarters a neck in advance of Retort which led her stablemate by slightly more than a length lengthIn In scoring her victory the first of the year the winner stood a long drive in game fashion but it was only in the final strides that Retort after having headed Dr Parrish and Jean Valjean for the lead gave way and Paul Neal was forced to drive the winner to the limit limitWith With the exception of Racketeer which followed well back throughout the others raced along in a manner which left no doubt of their being closely matched yet the result was the undoing of another favorite the honor being entrusted to Jean Valjean He appeared through after dropping back follow ¬ ing much use in forcing Dr Parrishs pace for a half mile but got going again in the heavy footing in the final sixteenth and just failed to outfinish the early leaders leadersCLOUDY CLOUDY WEATHER WEATHERCloudy Cloudy weather again served to hold down the attendance but no rain fell and the weather served to work some improvement in the track which barring rain should be in good condition for Wednesdays racing One of the chief sources of disappointment was the decisive downfall of Fiddler the Gallaher Combs starter which ruled as one of the strongest favorites of the after ¬ noon He was unplaced in the fourth race a highpriced selling affair for threeyearolds which resulted in a handy victory for Stock Market Uncle Matt was second and Char ¬ iot the rank outsider among the nine starters finished third thirdAdverse Adverse luck at the start where he and Valdosta were away in ragged order took from Fiddlers chances and while he suc ¬ ceeded in working his way to within a short distance of the lead after going threeeighths the severe effort required resulted in his rapid retirement after reaching the final quar ¬ ter Here the winner easily disposed of Ante Bellum which had displayed the most speed from the start and drawing away into safe command was not threatened by Uncle Matt or Chariot as the race ended endedG G V Barnes Whisk Arrow and K Russell made up the winning combination in the first race a threequarters contest that at ¬ tracted fifteen of the cheaper grade older performers The winner drew away from Arline Connors after reaching the stretch and won easily by one and onehalf lengths while Bonoby saved third by a short margin from David L Arline Connor and Bonoby were among those grouped in the mtttuel field while the winner ruled a strong second choice to Blewaway The latter ruined her chances when she went wide on the turn turnFLYING FLYING CHEROKEE SCORES SCORESThe The second race also having fifteen start ¬ ers this time from among the maiden juve ¬ nile colts and geldings witnessed a good con ¬ test with Flying Cherokee the winner Aerial Prince raced to second place while Brett the favorite followed and Tryor headed the oth ¬ ers The winner caught Aerial Prince and Brett after they had fought it out bitterly for the lead during the first half mile and heading them pulled away to win by a length a margin which separated Aerial Prince and Brett Both the latter were hard ridden during the duel for the lead and the winner found them distressed when his rider drove him up to them in the final eighth Eye White another which came in for consider ¬ able attention failed to enter contention at any stage and while fifth at the end was a good distance back from the leaders leadersThe The third favorite failed when Ruane suc ¬ cumbed to the Leader Stables Bob Kernan in the third race Bob Kernan won by a trifle more than a length while the offend ¬ ing Ruane after following well back for most of the distance succeeded in working his way into second place with belated speed At the finish he had but a half length over Myth which only gave way to him after an extended duel
