OFFDAY AT WOODBINE PARK Hopeful Steeplechase and Gros venor Plate Outstanding Races Ilyland H New Furnishes Winner of Jumping JumpingKacc Kacc Whitney Horses Finish FinishOneTwo OneTwo In Plate TORONTO Ont May 20 No special fea ¬ ture was listed for the third days racing at the Woodbine Park course of the Ontario Jockey Club today but despite this a good crowd turned out for the entertainment that was furnished and some excellent racing resulted Conditions overhead were ideal although there was very little change noted in the track which was still in muddy con ¬ dition from Mondays rain rainThe The most popular races of the day were the Hopeful Steeplechase two miles that saw Ryland H New sending the winner to the post in his Temple II This was a twomile race and the Grosvenor Plate was a contest over four and onehalf furlongs for juveniles Both of these resulted in popular triumphs Ryland H New who supplied the winner of the recent renewal of the Kings Plate saw his colors borne to victory by his recent importation and the H P Whitney stable finished first and second in the shorter race when Smear led home his stablemate Summer Day and three others The second third and fifth races of the day were the only races that did not carry the claiming clause clauseThe The Hopeful Steeplechase over two miles with fifteen jumps attracted eight starters The race was second on the program and fur ¬ nished opportunity for Ryland H News Temple II a recent importation to make his Canadian debut an auspicious one when he defeated the band that opposed him to score his initial victory in this country He took the measure of John Bosleys Dragon de Vertu with third falling to Toreador II from the Flying Horse Farm FarmTwo Two others finished the course when Fa thallah was six lengths in the rear of Torea ¬ dor II with John Sobieski a dozen lengths further back backThose Those to come to grief were the wellbacked pair from the Eastland Farm Stable Poplar Creek and Oakland both of which succumbed at the final jump while Ben Hur unseated his rider at the first obstacle Temple II raced in nearest pursuit of Poplar Creek which set the pace until two jumps from home when the latter surrendered and fell at the last jump Temple II although tir ¬ ing was able to withstand a drive to get a close verdict over the fastfinishing Dragon de Vertu VertuThe The Grosvenor Plate a race over four and a half furlongs for twoyearolds that was listed as the third was reduced to five Continued on twentysecond page OFFDAY AT WOODBINE PARK Continued from first page starters and a popular victory was scored by the H P Whitney Stable when Smear easily accounted for the main share of the purse while Summer Day another member of the same establishment had little diffi ¬ culty in saving second from Sustain which led Deedie and Clear Wing The Whitney pair were sent to the post the shortest priced favorites of the meeting and they vindicated the short odds when they easily defeated their opponents opponentsSummer Summer Day assumed command at once with Sustain attempting to keep pace and Smear was in advance of the others with Deedie bringing tip the rear This was the order until the head of the stretch where Smear displaced Sustain and when Maiben presumably under orders took a snug hold of Summer Day in the last sixteenth Smear was allowed to take an easy lead to have a half length margin at the end endThe The Eastland Farm Stable of C V B Cushman added another purse to its many earned at this meeting when it furnished the winner of the race for twoyearolds that inaugurated the sport for the afternoon General Toy ridden by L Schaefer proved best of the nine that started L Murrays Getgoin chased the winner past the finish lina beaten by a length while third fell to Noisy Miss MissFollowing Following at the heels of Mental and Noisy Miss in the early stages General Toy dis ¬ playing good speed in the sticky footing reached the front midway in the stretch and in the remaining stages when assured of his Victory his rider permitted his mount to hold his advantage under restraint Getgoin was forced to come from last place to earn second by a length and a half while Noisy Miss easily outstayed the tiring Mental MentalL L Haymakers Referendum after many failures finally found a track suitable to his weak underpinning with the result that he captured the main division of the purse in the Grafton Plate which came fourth On the card His victory came as the first real surprise of the afternoon when he led home G C Brentons Ruban Rouge by a length Billy Baughn was the one to take third place while Meander lasted long enough to take the measure of the others othersReferendum Referendum followed the pace of Billy Baughn and Meander in the early stages came fast when the pair began showing signs of tiring and going into command in the final furlong withstood the stretch rush of Ruban Rouge In earning second place Ruban Rouge was a length in advance of Billy Baughn
