BALKO CAPTURES ANOTHER Easily Leads Speed Handicap Field on Muddy Track High Strung Is Tiring Second In Sprint Over OverVIdchcr VIdchcr Course 3Iaya Beats BeatsOut Out Sarnzen II NEW YORK N T May 20 Balko win ¬ ner of the Toboggan Handiap for the Saga ¬ more Stable came right back in the five and a half furlongs of the Speed Handicap at Belmont Park today to be an easy win ¬ ner It was the feature of an interesting day of sport and was worth 4050 to the winner The track was still muddy Robert Li Gerrys High Strung raced to the place with W R Coes threeyearold Maya fin ¬ ishing an easy third before Mrs Graham Fair Vanderbilts Sarazen II IIWhile While there was no rain to mar the rac ¬ ing day it was chilly and cloudy and there was some falling off in the big attendance that did honor to Lord Derby for the Mon ¬ day racing and the running of the Sansovino Handicap The track condition resulted in the Speed Handicap being reduced from a promised field of eleven to only six at post time but it proved a good contest and it moved Balko up a bit among the sprinters The son of Omar Khayyam is always favored in muddy going but he was shouldering 118 pounds which was seven more than he took up in the Toboggan while High Strung with his assignment pf 124 was at the same notch as in the earlier sprint sprintHigh High Strung occasioned a slight delay at the post but the start was a good one and Finite was first away He did not last long in the lead for Balko High Strung and Maya quickly raced to the front and they dominated all the running Both High Strung and Maya held Balko well to the final furlong but there the black drew out with little effort to be winner by four lengths lengthsHigh High Strung outfinished the threeyear old though he was plainly tiring when he only saved the place by half a length The others were bunched a full five lengths away and Sarazen II led that division divisionPlaters Platers to race a mile was the first offer ¬ ing and it saw Mrs T W OBriens Rain or Shine the winner when he scored handily over Dim Ray from the California Stable with Mrs J H Buschers Mary Eloise han ¬ dily outfinishing Allege for third thirdThere There was some delay at the post for which the winner was largely responsible When the barrier rose he and Battler were more alert than the others They jumped away to set the pace and went along closely lapped for the run through the back stretch Allege Continued on twentysecond page BALKO CAPTURES ANOTHER Continued from first page was showing the way to the others and was racing strongly The others were fairly well lapped There was little change in running positions until half way around the bend for the stretch There Battler had enough of keeping step with Rain or Shine and he stopped badly while Dim Ray came into tjie contention and Allege moved up a bit But Rain or Shine at home in the going had drawn away until there was scant chance of his being beaten Swinging for the run home with a lead of three or four lengths the son of Pluvious held to his task and at the end was still two lengths to the good Dim Ray had easily outfinished the others while Mary Eloise after being outrun to the stretch closed a big gap to beat the tired Allege for third thirdTaras Taras Hall carried E M Byers silks to victory in the short course steeplechase under an excellent ride by P Donoghue It was an easy victory but that was made possible by reason of the peculiar ride of J Lambert on the Greentree Stables Bold Knight which raced second after being rated along last while the pace was slow F Ambrose Clarks Stoney Lonesome ridden by G H Pete Bostwick was third beating Mrs Clarks Zermatt for that part of the prize Of the nine that started the only one that failed to finish was Jefferson Livingstons imported juniper Eon which unseated C Smoot at the eleventh jump jumpVolunteer Volunteer was first to go to the front and he was followed by Taras Hail and Mirage with Zermatt also racing close up Lambert at once took Bold Knight back and while he saved ground with him he was content to go along in last place All through the early stages Donoghue had a good hold of Taras Hall as he permitted both Volunteer and Mirage to lead him and it was evident the son of Donnacona could go into the lead at the first asking Eon was close after the leaders but he was losing ground and being messed about in the running runningIt It was at the lower end of the field when Volunteer was through that Donoghue per ¬ mitted Taras Hall to move up and his move was matched by Baumon on Mirage The two drew away quickly and there Candy Blackbird narrowly missed going down as he came to the first jump in the back field Lambert and Bold Knight were still last and many lengths from the leaders As the move was made with Taras Hall he quickly drew away into a long lead and Mirage was a good ten lengths before Stoney Lonesome which had moved into third place Then came Zermatt Eon Volunteer Candy Blackbird and Bold Knight in the order named Then Lambert came to life and moved up with Bold Knight The son of Hollister caught them one after the other and was third to Taras Hall and Mirage at the end of the field By this time Taras Hall was gallop ¬ ing along in front so far that it was only a question of his standing up In the run home Bold Knight continued to gain but the move had come too late and the Byers fencer was home the winner by ten lengths Bold Knight had beaten Stoney Lonesome in spite of the ride and the others followed along in strung out order orderThere There was a good finish in the race for juveniles that was the third and L McAtee showed a flash of his real skill when he piloted Greatorex racing for Mrs Richard T Wilson to victory over Concord from the Newtondale Stable while Westernsr from the Dorwood Stable was third Incidentally there was a peculiar program mistake when the winner was described as a chestnut son of High Noon and Fantam Bala instead of a gray son of Stefan the Great and Days Over OverThe The start was a good one though Great ¬ orex went in the air slightly as the bar ¬ rier went up McAtee quickly had him straightened out however and he and West ¬ erner went out to show the way There was little to choose between the pair of them as they sped through the middle of the course but coming to the final furlong Kelsay dashed up on the outside with Con ¬ cord and he was going in a fashion that made him look like a sure winner But McAtee had something left with the gray colt and as he met that challenge he drew away from Westerner Concord tired slightly in the final drive but he was coming again at the end and the pair crossed the line so closely lapped that the result was in doubt until the Greatorex number was displayed Concord had beaten Westerner by a length and a half for second place and the others were soundly beaten Plater juveniles raced four and a half fur ¬ longs through the Widener course in the last race of the day with the result that II E Talbott Jrs Abduction scored his fifth con ¬ secutive victory the other four having been Maryland scores Golden Legend was the one to furnish all the contention and finish closely lapped on the winner with B S Cutlers Phantom Cloud beating Zinn for third Zinn incidentally was unfortunate when he was badly bumped by Miss Grace in the running He was going well at the end and but for the earlier interference might have been the winner
