JOEY BIBB QUALIFIES % Becomes American Derby Possibility After Winning Mondays Feature. ♦ Bon of Chatterton Displays Courage and Speed in Covering Mile in 1 :38 % — Thistle Fyrn Fails. ♦ HOMEWOOD, 111., June 15.— Joey Bibb, • son of Chatterton — Star Spangle, became an i i American Derby possibility today when he easily accounted for the fifth and feature race of the afternoons card. Racing gamely throughout, he won as he pleased over a L band of eight, which included Thistle Fyrn, the heavily backed favorite. Thistle Fyrn | failed to get any part of the purse, Overlay being second, and Ilium third. Joey Bibb . ran the mile distance in 1:38% and was ridden by jockey J. Smith. The race was stubbornly fought until Joey f Bibb caught the leaders at the stretch turn, but after that there was little to the contest. : The bad acting Martha Jones was on her worst behavior today and after delaying the ; start for many minutes began well in front - with most of the others in line. The fleet filly soon opened up a long lead and raced I down the back stretch, with Thistle Fyrn L second and well in hand. Joey Bibb had I dropped b-ck to last place in the first quarter, " but came again and was fourth when the far bend was reached. Martha Jones , and Thistle Fyrn began to tire at the stretch turn, and Joey Bibb, flashing around the , , outside, took command when the field was straightened out. He remained well in advance of the others to the finish, with Overlay dropping into second place in the long r Stretch run. DROP IN TEMPERATURE. The temperature took a decided drop this , afternoon and the air was rather cool. The z usual good Monday crowd was present and the track was fast. Catherine Fox, a daughter of Mount Beacon—For Keeps, making her first start, • spreadeagled a large band to win the opening race. Jockey M. Rose hustled her to the lead at the outset and she led by a wide J margin for most of the way. Playing, heavily backed, finished in second place, with 1 Verda annexing third money. The winner, • despite recent good trials, was almost entirely overlook and paid 8.78. A heavy T play developed for Yes, also a first-time 8 starter, previous to the race, but she was 3 off slowly and had little chance. Skrip, which had many supporters in the 2 second race, won a narrow victory over r Ramus and the decision might have been reversed had not jockey C. E. Allen met with a J peculiar accident. The boy had the mount j on Ramus and, while whipping the animal j in the stretch, threw his right arm out of place and was in great pain during the final stages of the contest. He managed to pull 1 the animal up, but dismounted and was conveyed back to the judges stands in one of | the track vehicles. So bad was the injury that he was forced to cancel his remaining mounts and his arm must be reset. Both | Skrip and Ramus were outrun early and came from behind, while Tred Avon finished j third. GREENTREE STABLE COLORS. The Greentree Stable colors were carried i to victory by Bryonia, an outsider, in the ; third race. The filly showed much speed 1 in leading all the way to win by five lengths. . Her time of 1:06% was the fastest of the meeting for the five and one-half furlongs 3 distance. Ballyhoo, another neglected one, , was second and Princess Ivre finished third. . Adobe Post, odds-on favorite, was shut off f in the first quarter, and although jockey ? Earl Pool rushed him into contention on i the outside he had little left for the final 1 drive and tired badly. Mary Borah, daughter of Princess Doreen, also had a rough i race. Bryonia paid 2.88 and was ridden i by R. West, who substituted for the injured i C. E. Allen. Ray Blades was installed favorite in the I fourth race and showed an impressive effort - to win with ease. Sent to the lead in the first quarter, the gelding drew away f after entering the stretch and was under r restraint at the end. Karl Eitel, the Cough-lin - star, making his first start of the * * season, showed a good performance to be ■ second, while Sister Zoe, coming fast in the i last quarter after being outrun earlier, took c third money from Annapolitan, a field horse. Ray Blades was ridden by jockey M. Rose ; and it was the second success of the day f for the lad. . Continued on twenty-second pagej_ JOEY BIBB QUALIFIES l | Continued from first page. " Airs and Graces was the winner of the fifth race. She was ridden by R. Cooper, , went to the front in the run down the J back stretch and rounding the far turn drew away into a long lead. In the run through the home stretch Airs and Graces : began to tire and at the finish was under , a gruelling drive to beat Kentucky Colonel by a length. Visionary was third and Banal Girl, the favorite, last but one. . The fifth race was the second half of the dual mutuel wagering which was inaugurated " by the Montreal Jockey Club on Saturday. The winner paid the handsome 5 return of ,419.25 for a wager. Had ~ either the second or third horse won they " would have paid the same price.
