I . ! | LADIES DAY AT BAINBRIDGE « Thistle Jean Accounts for Race for Fillies and Mares. « Rain Over Week-End Fails to Slow Up Track — Dashaway Victorious In Opening Contest. 1 CLEVELAND, Ohio, June 15.— Thistle Jean, from the Blue Star Stable, took the measure of the best field starting at bridge Park this afternoon, winning the fifth race, exclusively for fillies and mares, over one mile. E. D. McCuans Sweep-Net and V. M. Saighs Blue Canopy divided the minor portions of the purse, with Luxury finishing a close fourth. Blue Canopy set the pace in the early stages, closely pressed by Phi Delta. After making the far turn Phi Delta tired and Thistle Jean challenged. When straightened out for the run home Thistle Jean quickly took command and opened up an easy lead, winning with much to spare. Sweep-Net was far back for half the distance then came with a brilliant rush and raced into second place handily in the last seventy yards. Luxury saved ground in the stretch, forcing Blue Canopy to a drive at the end to save third. Rain over the week-end failed to slow up the track to any great extent, but it cooled the air and the weather was ideal today. The attendance was good for Monday. It was Ladies Day, and the fair sex was present in large numbers. The racing was in-teresting, despite the absence of any sched-I uled feature. An upset came with the running of the opening race when W. F. Knebelkamps Dashaway raced past Mote and Cash Play in the last sixteenth. She eventually scored with considerable to spare after gaining much ground and returned a handsome dividend. Mote, Cash Play and Sunview were prominent to the stretch, with Sunview showing the way. Mote and Cash Play drew clear of the others midway in the stretch and Mote outgamed the Cain colorbearer for second place. Alamae and Merry Windsor fought for the leadership closely lapped for the entire distance in the second race. Alamae held on better today than in her last appearance here and gained the verdict by a narrow margin in a hard drive. Merry Windsor held on courageously to secure second. Hip- pias raced in third place in the last half mile, finishing close up, but failed to im- prove on that position. Twill saved much ground in the stretch, looming up as a dangerous factor a furlong out, but could never get to the leaders. W. F. Knebelkamp made it a double when Bunt accounted for the third race. The Mid- way filly followed in closest pursuit of the pacemaker, Dominant Star, until midway in the stretch, then moved up on the outside and, wearing the leader down, drew clear in the last few strides. Dominant Star was a handy second. A rousing finish resulted for third honors, and Sporting Maudie gained the verdict by a head over Ruffle after working her way up next to the inner rail in the stretch. Closing courageously on the outside of his opponents during the final furlong of the fourth race, Master Durbar overhauled Fair Atina and Leader during the last few yards to score a well earned success after a hard drive. It marked his maiden victory. Fair Atina led to the stretch head, where she was joined by Leader and this pair raced closely lapped all during the run home. Leader proved the gamer in the final drive for second. After beginning poorly, Baffling Star raced over the others to finish fourth. w
