BARGAINS AND THE REVERSE Lottery of Yearling Buying Vividly Illustrated in Juvenile Successes and Failures of 1931. The lottery of yearling buying is vividly illustrated year after year in the records of the youngsters sold following the acid test of racing as two-year-olds. For instance, at the yearling sales of 1930 fifteen yearlings by Sir Gallahad III. sold for the unprecedented price of 46,300, yet the unfashionably named Butter Beans-, which only realized 75 at the sales mart, won 5,170 as a two-year-old in 1931, a sum nearly equalling tho amount won by the entire group mentioned above. Butter Beans was one of the real bargains of the sales of 1930, judged solely by his record as a two-year-old. Kakapo proved that the ,100 paid for him as a yearling was far below his true worth, aa he won 3,180, the result of victories hi the Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes and other races. Pairbypair well repaid an outlay of ,100 by winning 3,775. Lucky Tom brought ,000 at the sales mart and won 3,140; Proteus cost ,800 and won 2,850, and Uncanny accounted for 7,830 to offset the purchase price of ,200. The above were some of the bargains, while the other side of the picture shows that Texas Knight and Gala Flight each sold for 0,000 and only won ,350 each. Lady Teddy could only gather 00 for an expenditure of 6,500, while Gallant Sirs contribution of ,300 was hardly commensurate with the price of 4,000 paid for him. Liberty Limited, for which 6,000 was paid, won ,400, but he is considered highly and may yet reward his purchaser for the large sum paid for him as a yearling. That may be said of the others, but, judging strictly by their records as two-year-olds in 1931, the following are the yearlings of 1930 which proved real bargains, with a corresponding group which failed to win their purchase price.
