1 3 , j , . f TURF NECROLOGY OF 1931 ? $ Men prominent in the affairs of American breeding and racing answered the last summons in 1931. Such were John McEntee Bowman, James L. Holland, James Rowe, Jr., "Father" Bill Daly, James F. OHara, Lew Marion, Charles Ellison, T. W. "Chicago" OBrien, Arthur E. Blanchard and Stuart Polk. John McEntee Bowman was president of the United Hunts Racing Association, president of the National Horse Show and president of the Havana-American Jockey Club, as well as one of the foremost promoters of amateur racing and steeplechasing. James Rowe, Jr., was a noted trainer, son of the famous James Rowe, of whom there was no better trainer anywhere in the world. "Father" Bill Daley was another trainer of skill and a great developer of jockeys. Lew Marian was still another trainer who in his day gained fame second to none. Charles Ellison and T. W. "Chicago" OBrien were two noted plungers, as well as turfmen, of excellent reputation. Arthur E. Blanchard was a racing official and was well and favorably known in the Middle West and the South. Stuart Polk was an owner and trainer who raced in various sections of the country with a goodly measure of success. He met with an untimely death in ah auto accident in San Francisco.
