STARS READY FOR DERBY RACE Jefferson Feature Certain to Attract Best of Three-Year-Olds Now in Training. NEW ORLEANS, La. Jan. 7. The probable field for the first running of the ,000 added Jefferson Derby, one mile, to be run Saturday, January 23, closing day of the meeting, now includes a large percentage of the leading three-year-olds at the local tracks and, barring a set-back in training, starters from all the larger stables are assured. The distance and conditions are popular with the trainers, and if favorable training conditions are encountered, all of the outstanding colts and fillies in the list of probable starters will be ready. John Schorr, trainer of the Three Ds Stock Farm Stable of W. T. Waggoner and Sons, is pointing Sir Melton and Texas Knight, while Col. E. R. Bradley will have a starter or two from among the dozen of Derby age William Hurley is training at the Fair Grounds. Bertjohn, Busted, Bengal Tiger and Battling Knight are among the most highly regarded of the Bradley three-year-olds. J. J. Robinsons colors are almost certain to be carried by Flying Don, while S. W. Labrot has two strong candidates in Mexico and Springsteel. The crack Sazerac, which races for A. B. Letellier, local patron, is being prepared for the race, and Princess Camelia, Joseph Leiters brilliant stake win- ning filly, is a probable starter. C. V. Whitneys Habanero and Jack B., are probable participants and Frank Serembas Defier may be ready for the race, the first derby of the year. Many other probable starters are found in other of the stables, and racing secretary Julius G. Reeder anticipates an entry list of from twenty-five to thirty. Each nomination will be made at a cost of 0, and with 00 additional to start and ,000 added by the management, the winners end may closely approach ,000.
