IMPORTED COLT FIRST NAMED Border Warrants Nomination Initial Entry for Kentucky Derby. Only One Foreign Horse Has Derby Victor to Credit Bashford Manor Fills Well. LOUISVILLE, Ky., Feb. 4. An imported colt was the first nomination ffc the 0,003 added Kentucky Derby, to be run at Churchill Downs Saturday, May 7, according to an announcement by Col. M. J. Winn, executive director of Churchill Downs. Border Warrant, a three-year-old son ol Warden of the Marches and Roxana, owned by Raoul Walsh, well known motion picture director, was the first entry in the big race. Border Warrant was purchased for Mr, Walsh by Kerr and Co. of Dublin from the colt breeder, C. L. Mackean. Border Warrant will be acclimatized at T. B. Youngs Hinata Farm near Lexington, Ky. As soon as the weather permits he will be taken up and his preparation for the Derby will begin. Only one foreign horse has ever won the Kentucky Derby. That was Billings and Johnsons Omar Khayyam in 1917. Omar Khayyam was an outsider. The previous year Star Hawk, an imported colt, was beaten by a neck by George Smith. A masterful ride by Johnny Loftus had much to do with the defeat of the foreigner in this race. Racegoers were pleased with the an; nouncement of Maj. Louis Beard of the Whitney establishment that the great filly Top Flight would be started in the Kentucky Derby if she trains well. This remarkable miss, unquestioned ruler of the two-year-old ranks last year, doubtless will rule favorite for the Derby, despite the fact that fillies so often fail to hold their own with the other sex in three-year-old racing. However, a filly with the great class ol Top Flight may well go on to the triumph enjoyed by a former member of her stable, Regret, which won the Kentucky Derby in 1915, the only filly ever to achieve this feat. Although only one filly has won the Derby, a number of others have proved keen contenders. Lady Navarre finished second to Sir Huon in 1906; Flamma was third to Worth and Duval in 1912; Gowell was third to Donerail and Ten Point in 1913; Bronze-wing was third to Old Rosebud and Hodge in 1914; Viva America was third to Exterminator and Escoba in 1918; Prudery was third, to Behave Yourself and Black Servant in 1921.. Nominations for the Kentucky Derby, the Clark Handicap, the Kentucky Oaks and the Bashford Manor Stakes, which will be run at Churchill Downs during the spring meeting, April 30 to May 21, came in rapidly. The Bashford Manor especially filled well, doubtless due to the fact that for the first time it is open to fillies as well as colts and geldings.
