SWEEPING LIGHT DERBY COLT Career as Juvenile Justifies Confidence of Trainer Gordon. Mrs. Graham Fair Vanderbilfs Star Finished Second to Tick On In Rich Hopeful Stakes. .. LOUISVILLE, Ky., Feb. 4. One of the finest prospects for the 0,000 added Kentucky Derby, to be run at Churchill Downs Saturday, May 7, is Mrs. Graham Fair Vanderbilfs good colt Sweeping Light. This son of Manna Sweeping Glane, is wintering at the local Douglas Park hrack ,and appears to be every inch of championship caliber. Trainer Alex Gordon is much pleased with the Derby chances of the colt. He believes that his races as a two-year-old showed him to be one of the best of his age. Although he won only two of seven starts, an analysis of his races shows that Mr. Gordons opinion is well founded. Sweeping Light made his first start at Aqueduct in a maiden race June 22. It evidently was a schooling effort, but in his next start a few days later he ran a smashing race over five furlongs, Espinaca barely lasting to beat him by a nose. His next start was at Saratoga, and he won impressively from Pompeius and others. In his next effort at the Spa he was made a 1 to 2 favorite, but was so unruly at the post that he was placed outside the starting gate, and when the barrier was released he was caught flat-footed. He was then rushed too much in the early stages and, although he got to the front, he tired, and had to be satisfied with second place. He then went to the post in the Saratoga -Special, and finished fourth to Top Flight, Indian Runner and Curacao. He was one of nineteen starters in the Hopeful, and began slowly. He finally got through, however, and finished fast to take second place, being beaten by Tick On. His final effort of the year was in the Champagne Stakes, and he was winner over Pompeius, Cambal, Burgoo King, The Crane, Espinaca and others. Mrs. Vanderbilfs colors always have been popular at Churchill Downs, and Sweeping Light is sure to, have a large following if he trains satisfactorily for the big race. Trainer Gordon will take him East In the spring for early racing on the metropolitan tracks, and return him here for the Kentucky Derby. Mrs. Vanderbilfs Desert Light ruled a choice for the Kentucky Derby of 1930, after winning the 1929 Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes, but he failed to come to hand for the Derby. Trainer Gordon believes the career of Sweeping Light will tell a different story. Stake blanks for the spring meeting at Churchill Downs were mailed out Saturday. The events to be run during the nineteen days of racing "will close Wednesday, February 3. The Churchill Downs meeting will open Saturday, April 30, and close Saturday, May 21. This is the first year since the establishment of the Bashford Manor stakes that it has been open to both sexes, and the nominations to this event are expected to exceed all other years bya wide margin. The weights for the Clark Handicap will be released shortly after the entries are tabulated for this event. It will be decided on the opening day of the meeting, Saturday, April 30.
