1931 STAKE WINNING JOCKEYS Eiders Who Figured Prominently in Feature Races of Last Year. . C. Kurtsinger Tops List With 69,330 Won by Horses Which he Rode R. Workman Second With 60,730. Horses may make jockeys, or the reverse rule may apply, or, more logically, it is a little of one and a little of the other; but, anyway you like it, there is no getting away from the fact that when good horses are ridden by good jockeys success for both is assured. It would, of course, be impossible for jockeys to earn money up in the hundreds of thousands of dollars without having mounts on good horses in rich stakes, and in many cases where there is an abundance of class in the fields that strive for the big stakes it is superior jockeyship which decides just where the richest plums fall. Top Flight, the two-year-old, and Twenty Grand, the three-year-old of the year in question, were the biggest stake winners in 1931, and their regular riders were the leaders among the stake-winning jockeys. C. Kurtsinger led R. Workman by a small margin because he had the leg up on Twenty Grand in more stakes than Workman had on the two-year-old. The difference was that between 69,330 and 60,730. Either amount is a tremendous lot of money for a jockey to win in stake races, in a single year, yet Kurtsinger literally "coasted" to his gigantic total, so superior was the horse-jockey combination in the great stakes in which Twenty Grand won. Twenty Grand won the Dwyer Stakes by two lengths, at 1 to 30 in the betting; he won the Jockey Club Gold Cup by three lengths, at 1 to 50; the Lawrence Realization by six lengths; the Kentucky Derby by four lengths, and the Belmont Stakes by ten lengths. And then, after the Twenty Grand campaign was over, Kurtsinger was legged up on St. Brideaux and won the Latonia Championship Stakes,; at a mile and three-quarters, by six lengths. Kurtsingers largest single stake was the Belmont, 8,770, and next was the Kentucky Derbys 8,725. The Greentree rider had a fair start on Workman by riding the winners of the winter stakes in Florida, including the Florida Derby, and he came to the "big time" with a good deal more than 0,000 to his credit before Workman got into action. Workman would have nassed Kurtsinger had he been in the Top Flight stirrups with the beginning of the fillys unprecedented money-winning streak, but he was not. A. Robertson rode Top Flight in her maiden race and victory, the Clover Stakes, and it was Robertson who piloted her in the Lassie Stakes at Arlington Park. Robertson was also fortunate enough to ride Mate in this colts greatest victory, the , Classic Stakes, the richest scored by any three-year-old, and these successes gave Robertson third place over George Ellis, who rode Mate in the Preakness Stakes and American Derby. Other notable victories achieved by Robertson were on Mad Frump in the Endurance, and on Dr. Freeland in the Southern Maryland Handicap. "Robby" was forging on to the 00,000 mark when the rich stake season "came to a close in Maryland. His total reached 93,445. Ellis won 30,000, and then came Pete Walls, with 13,535; E. Steffen. with 11,-055. and L. McAtee. with 08,900. Those were the jockeys to win in excess of 00,000. This figure, flat, was reached by Steve ODonnell in his single stake victory of the year, the Agua Caliente Handicap, with the now retired Mike Hall. C. KURTSINGER Stake. Track and Date. Won.
