BEGIN TRAINING AT TANFORAN . Five Hundred Horses Stabled at San Bruno Course. Schooling of Older Horses and Two-Year-Olds to Begin Soon Increase JIandi- -cap Distance. - SAN BRUNO, Calif., Feb. 9. Training has begun at Tanforan for the spring meeting. After a let-up following the conclusion of the winter season of sport, the trainers of the 500 thoroughbreds at the course are beginning to give their horses preliminary exercise. The objective is to have all of the horses at the height of form in the days just prior to the opening. After a "spell," as the Australians call a rest, a galloper is brought up to racing condition by easy stages. Jogging does at first. A little later come the stiff "works" to improve the wind and make the flesh hard. Even after a careful period of training only a highly capable trainer can pronounce a horse ready for the fray. In these days of the stall gate, much time must be given to the schooling of the thoroughbreds in the modern contrivance. Under the old system of starting from the barrier, the animals were more or less in motion when the start came. Nowadays they must learn to get going early after beginning flat-footed, or nearly so. Two-year-olds will require even more schooling than the older horses, as they have never been to the races. When the education of the young ones has progressed somewhat under the tutelage of their trainers, they will be turned over to starter Harry Morrissey. Close observers predict that the starter will have the babies so accustomed to the stalls by the time opening day rolls around that they will not be at any disadvantage in meeting two-year-olds from Agua Caliente, which have been racing since early last month. The distance of the Governor Rolph Handicap, which was six furlongs at its first running, will be one mile and an eighth at its renewal. The fans are strongly in favor of the change, as they like to see the start of a race on the front stretch. Last April, on being informed the event named in his honor was to have its beginning on the back stretch, thj Governor exclaimed: "What! My race is to start way over there!"
