JAMES RIVER, away slowly, improved his position on the turn and, wearing down the leaders in the stretch, had speed to spare when challenged and outlasted CAPTAIN ED. The latter raced wide in the early stages, but finished gamely and was wearing down the winner. LOVE OFFERING, away fast, set a rapid pace, raced FLASH O WHITE into defeat in the first half mile, then tired in the stretch. FLASH O WHITE tired under urging. OLD JUDGE, bumped slightly at the start, finished with a rush. STRAIT JACKET, a factor throughout, held on resolutely. POSTPONEMENT, racing green for an eighth, was going fastest of all in the final strides. CHIEF DAUNT, DOME and HILDUR ROCK were in close quarters in the last sixteenth mile. BENEDICT showed early speed, then tired in the stretch and was shuffled back in the final seventy yards. SMOKE CLOUD, buffeted about at the start, had no chance thereafter. GAY BIRD came through on the outside, challenged in the stretch, but could not get up. ALDERSHOT lacked speed.
