WRIGHTS PRETENTIOUS PLANS Chicagoan Enters Racing on Big Scale Calumet Farm Famous. John Hertz Aiding Windy City Recruit and Arlington Park Director Wi"a" Racing Plans. Warren Wright of Chicago, a newcomer to the thoroughbred owners ranks, plans to enter racing and breeding on a pretentious scale. Wright and his recently deceased father were prominent trotting horse owners, but in the past few years were attracted to the thoroughbred. With Charles McCullogh of Chicago, he joined the Arlington Park Association and was elected to membership in the Post and Paddock Club. Last season he attended the yearling sales at Saratoga Springs and, through John Hertz, made several purchases. Later at private terms he acquired other horses and registered the nom de course of the Calumet Stable. Calumet Farm for years had been the home of the trotter, and many well known performers were raised there. It is one of the picturesque spots in the breeding section of Kentucky. Situated near Lexington, the farm is pronounced ideal for rearing young horses. There is plenty of" water on the grounds and stable accommodations are up to the standard in that section set by wealthy sportsmen who indulge in that branch of the sport. The recent sales held by the Old Glory Company saw the passing- of Calumet Farm as a trotting horse nursery. Mares and stallions were disposed of and the place will be restocked with thoroughbreds. John Hertz is aiding Wright in the selection of brood mares. At the recent sale held at Lexington by C. V. Whitney, the mares that were sold to John Hertz were, it is understood, bid in for the account of Wright. The Calumet Stable has made several nominations to stakes to be run at Belmont Park and Saratoga Springs this season. The nominations are for the two-year-old events. The yearlings named were purchased at the Continued on twenty-second page. WRIGHTS PRETENTIOUS PLANS Continued from first page. Rancocas Stable sale at Saratoga. Frank Hacket, who is business agent for John Hertz, made the entries in the name of the Calumet Stable. The trainer has not been appointed. According to local horsemen, Will Knapp, who trains the Hertz horses, will campaign the stable in the East next year. The brood mares which were purchased at the Whitney sale by John Hertz and said to be for the Calumet Stable, were as follows: Peter Polly, top price of the vendue, which cost ,300; Wiggle Waggle, ,100; Fly by Day, ,100; Dendera, ,000; Wild Polly, ,600; Arethusa, ,500; Lisa, 00; Fly Leaf, 50 and Exposay, 00. No stallion was purchased, and it is surmised that the majority of the mares will be bred to Reigh Count, which stands at the Hertz farm, Cary, 111. The three yearlings, which were purchased at the Rancocas Stable sale on Futurity Day last at Belmont Park, were knocked down to Mrs. John Hertz. Wright was present at the sale. Immediately after it he and Hertz hurried back to New York and boarded a train for Chicago. Business called them back to Chicago and they were forced to miss the running of the big event. The yearlings were two fillies and a colt, and they sold for 4,000. The top price was paid for a bay daughter of Bud Lerner, from Katrina, a half-brother to Mokatam. After spirited bidding this miss was sold for ,500. A chestnut colt by Bud Lerner, from Basquaise, was purchased for ,000 and another filly by Bud Lerner, from Afana, was bid in for ,500.
