"Tony" Pascuma, who will probably have the mount on Lucky Tom in the Kentucky Derby if this Master Charlie colt wins the Louisiana Derby and becomes one of the leading candidates for the early stakes for three-year-olds, as is now predicted in the South, heads that division of jockeys who in 1931 passed the 0,000 mark in stake winnings but fell considerably short of 00,000. Pascuma is closely identified with the career of Lucky Tom. He did not ride him in all races as a two-year-old, but it was his good fortune to have the mount when Lucky Tom won the Grand Union Hotel Stakes and the Sprightful Stakes, these two victories representing nearly a fourth of the total won by Pascuma during a very busy year. The Grand Union was his most valuable conquest, worth 1,875. The Sprightful was worth ,040. Pascumas stake successes altogether amounted to 9,895. Three others of note were the Shevlin Stakes, Toronto Cup Handicap and Nursery Handicap. In the Shevlin, worth ,150, he rode Sir Ashley and had the satisfaction of piloting that colt ahead of Danour and the famous Jamestown. The latter was 1 to 3 in the betting. In the Toronto Cup his winning mount was Fris-ius, and he won the Nursery Handicap with Faireno. C. Phillips finished very close to Pascuma in the money column, -his stake winnings amounting to 9,580. It was Phillips who rode Sun Beau, the worlds leading money winner in the three stakes he won in the Chicago district. He was on Sun Beau when the Kilmer star won the Arlington Cup, defeating Mike Hall, Gallant Knight and Spanish Play. Then he won the Arlington Handicap with Sun Beau, defeating Satin Spar, Plucky Play, Mike Hall and others, and he rode Sun Beau in the Lincoln Handicap. The veteran Mack Garner won 7,020 in stake money. He won none in excess of ,000, but accumulated a good many stakes of comparatively small value. Some of the races in which Garner was successful provided their share of excitement and surprise. He rode Mr. Sponge when that Widener racer met Balko, admittedly one of the greatest sprinters in the country, at equal weights of 128 pounds, and defeated him at three-quarters of a mile, setting a new Laurel track record of 1:11. This was in the Capital Handicap. Mr. Sponge, with Garner up, also defeated Flying Heels in the. Delaware Handicap, running a mile in 1:36. Some other notable victories scored by Garner were in the Merchants and Citizens Handicap, at Saratoga, with Curate; Astoria Handicap, at Aqueduct, with- Stagecraft, and Maryland Breeders Futurity, at Laurel, with Spring-steel. J. Bejshak won among other stakes the Selima, with Laughing Queen; the Harford Handicap, with Balko, and the Spalding Lowe Jenkins Handicap, with Osculator. In the latter event Osculator triumphed over Tick On and Burning Blaze, two of the best ypungsters of the year. His stake winnings amounted to 7,450. D. Trivett and Plucky Play were the surprise combination of midwestern racing. Trivett had the mount oh Plucky Play when the Northway Stable colt beat Mike Hall, The Nut, Gallant Knight and others in the Stars and Stripes Handicap. Gallant Knight was about 8 to 10 in the betting and Plucky Play, as the winner, paid 8.90. Then Trivett steered Plucky Play to victory over Sun Beau in the Hawthorne Handicap, establishing a new track record for the mile and an eighth. These two upsets enabled Trivett to get into the 0,000 class, his stakes totaling 2,130. Frankie Coltiletti, one of the veterans, won 0,500, his stakes including the Coaching Club American Oaks, Potomac Handicap and Agua Caliente Futurity.
