RENAISSANCE DEFEATED Crystal Prince Outstays J. J. Robinsons Star by a Nose. Acadian Purse Heads Fair Grounds Program Marlene Best of Three-Year-Olds in Second Race. NEW ORLEANS, La., Feb. 11. Renaissance, J. J. Robinsons good three-year-old, "suffered his second defeat in three starts here this winter when Crystal Prince, which races for P. C. Thompson, defeated him by a nose in the Acadian Purse, the principal race on todays card at the Fair Grounds. The feature was exclusively for three-year-olds, and Flaunt, the Warm Stable representative, finished third, leading Texas Knight and Bengal Tiger. Under the conditions, Renaissance carried top weight of 117 pounds, two pounds more -than the winner, and the slight difference in imposts might have been the deciding factor in the stubborn and thrilling contest provided by the two good performers. At the finish they led Flaunt, which carried 108 pounds, by two and one-half lengths, the latter losing some ground in bearing out on the stretch turn. From a fast start, Renaissance, ridden by A. Pascuma, was sent out in an attempt to lead his rivals at every stage, while the victor, strongly ridden by E. Pool, having more early speed than in recent performances, kept in rather close pursuit of the Robinson colt. Flaunt was also kept close up, while Texas Knight and Bengal Tiger were outrun. On the stretch turn Renaissance stole away from the victor until his advantage amounted to three lengths, but in the stretch Crystal Prince steadily narrowed the distance until he reached the lead just inside the last eighth. Upon taking the lead Crystal Prince faltered and Renaissance, holding on stubbornly, all but headed him again before the finish was reached. Renaissance ruled a pronounced favorite, and the winner returned odds of .10 to . He ran the distance over a fast track in 1:13, and the victory Pool scored astride him was the veteran riders second of the day. Pleasant weather ruled, and the patronage was up to standard. Under the revised schedule for purse distribution for the six days of Fair Grounds racing beginning Monday, as revealed in the condition book for that period, the daily purse money will aggregate ,200, except on Saturday, February 20, when it will total ,600. Condition books for the week in question were distributed this afternoon. Under the new scale, week day programs will comprise one race of ,000 value, two at 00 and four at 00. The Saturday distribution will be divided over three races at 00 each, two at ,000, one at 00 and one at ,000, the latter being the ,000 Jack L. Dempsey Memorial Handicap.
