1931 STAKE WINNING JOCKEYS Riders Whose Mounts Won Between 0,000 and 0,000 in Feature Races Last Year. i It wasnt necessary for jockey T. Malley to break into the 50,000-to-00,000 stake winners circle to gain a highly creditable record for the season of 1931. He. participated in ten stakes for a credit of 6,550 and some of these were races that he can point to with great pride. Malley won one Derby, the Empire City, and he had to give Sir Ashley a good ride to get to the front, his mount having met with considerable interference. He finally overtook Danour, the Belair Stud candidate, and took down the main prize of ,550. He won the Eastview Stakes with Universe, his most valuable; the Sanford Stakes, with Mad Pursuit; the Brookdale Handicap, with Sidney Grant, and the Junior Champion Stakes, with Faireno. In the Junior Champion Faireno defeated Lucky Tom, which has been much in the public eye this winter as a Derby possibility. Willie Garner figured in few stakes, but he took down two of considerable value, the Eastern Shore Handicap and the Richard Johnson Stakes. His mount in both was the sterling Burning Blaze, of the Valley Lake Stable. In the Eastern Shore, which was worth 5,650, Burning Blaze beat the favorite, Hygro, and, among others, Tick On, winner of the Hopeful. Tick On again was defeated by Garners mount in the Richard Johnson, along with Pairbypair, Burgoo King and others. Garner rode Uma, the long shot winner of the Debutante Stakes at Washington Park, Uma paying 6.06. Garners total from these three stakes was 5,245. C. Landolt won only a few dollars less than Garner, 5,230. He it was who rode Spanish Play, the winner of two Derbys, the Louisiana and the Latonia. The Latonia was worth 2,575 and Landolt did a good job when he brought the colt in ahead of St. Brideaux in this mile and a half Derby, his winner paying 9.82 in the mutuels. The Louisiana was a very closely contested Derby, the first four finishing noses apart and Spanish Play equaling the track record. Landolt won the Dearborn Handicap at Lincoln Fields with J. Leiters Princess Camelia. Willie Fronk won 9,400 in a single stake, the Post and Paddock, which he won with Burning Blaze. Mr. R. McKinney, the rider of steeplechasers, was oh Mrs. J. H. Whitneys Green Cheese in two of that jumpers triumphs, the Grand National Steeplechase Handicap and the Manly Memorial. Mr. McKinneys total in stakes was 9,035. J. Smiths five stake victories brought 7,-475. The good two-year-old, Proteus, won three of these, the Idle Hour Stakes, Bash-ford Manor and Thomas Curran Memorial. Smith won the Independence and Enquirer Handicaps at Latonia with Manta. E. James began a good list of stake successes by winniiig the 0,775 New Orleans Handicap, with Jimmy Moran. He repeated with Jimmy Moran in the Mardi Gras Handicap. His Kentucky Oaks victory, with Cousin Jo, was worth ,610. Altogether he won 6,190 in stakes. Another gentleman rider, G. H. Bostwick, passed 0,000. His mount was T. Hitchcocks Chenango and with him he won the Meadowbrook, Glendale, Governor Ogle and Temple Gwathmey Memorial Steeplechase Handicaps. F. Catrone won, among other stakes, the Tremont, at Aqueduct, with Economic, and the Ohio State Derby, with A La Carte. In this Derby A La Carte beat Spanish Play by seven lengths in the mud, and Up, winner of the Agua Caliente Derby, also was in the beaten field.
