JAMAICA STAKES NOMINATIONS 1 Total of 966 Entries Received for Eighteen Spring Fixtures to Be Run at New Yorks Inaugural Meeting NEW YORK, N. Y Feb. 11. Racing like finance and farming, always anticipates the season. To the ardent follower of the royal sport the backbone of winter is broken with the first public announcement of nominations to the spring stakes and handicaps. It matters little to the initiated how much s now and sleet may intervene before the bugle call to colors is sounded; .they know that come what may, "spring is just around the corner." As usual, the opening scene of this years 169 days of racing, under the juris- diction of The Jockey Club, takes place at the Jamaica course, beginning Saturday, April 16, and continuing there twenty-two days. During the session there will be eighteen major events decided, including the 0,000 Wood Memorial, the seasons eye-opener for handicappers, layers and players. The list of nominations to the eighteen fixtures totals 966; of which fifty-two are to the Wood Memorial, twenty-one to the Excelsior Handicap, twenty-one to the Kings County Handicap, and thirty-seven to the customary opening day attraction, the Pau-monok Handicap. The Metropolitan Jockey Clubs optimism is strikingly manifested by president Edward F. Kilroes decision to keep the amount allotted to this years spring stakes and overnight events up to that of last spring. The added money to the eighteen stakes totalling 1,500, the same as in 1931. After the long, lean winter Jamaicas opening with its liberal policy cannot come too soon to owners and trainers, who in common with everyone else have suffered from the widespread financial readjustment now taking place. According to the list furnished by racing secretary Henry C. Pebler, ninety individual owners have sent in the nominations totalling 966. Of this number C. V. Whitney leads with ninety-six, the Belair Stud contributed forty-eight, the Dorwood Stable forty-four, and James Butler forty-one entries. Among the fifty-two horses eligible for the 0,000 Wood Memorial are Faireno, Pardee, Universe, Pompeius, Morfair, Allenfern, Sweeping Light, Parry, Cambal, Tick On, Economic, Mad Pursuit, Air Pilot, Barcelona Pete, Top Flight and Fall Apple.
