LUCKY TOMS RIVALS MEET Trial Handicap to Indicate One He Must Beat in Derby. . Robinson Candidate Will Be Engaged at Same Time in Florida Feature Trial Nominations Close Saturday. NEW ORLEANS, La., Feb. 17. When nominations for the ,000 added Derby Trial Handicap closing Saturday are compiled, racing secretary Joseph McLennan is confident that, with but one exception, all the most highly regarded and successful three-year-olds here will be found eligible for the fixture inaugurated last year and coming up for its second running Saturday, February 27. The lone important absentee from the list of nominees may be J. J. Robinsons sterling Lucky Tom, winner of the Jefferson Derby and favorite for the 0,000 added Louisiana Derby, to be run for the first time at the Fair Grounds Saturday, March 19, closing day of the meeting. On the afternoon when the mile Trial will be run, Lucky Tom will, if present plans do not miscarry, meet the best of his age at Hialeah Park in contest for Florida Derby honors. Under plans of H. C. Riddle, trainer of the brilliant son of Master Charlie and Phyllis Louise, he will be transferred to the Miami course early next week. With the winter champion of his division out of the Derby Trial, the race should definitely reveal the most formidable of his rivals for Louisiana Derby laurels. Secretary McLennan anticipates a field that will include Renaissance, stable companion of Lucky Tom; Bertjohn, Camp Douglas, Merry Fox, Sarietta, Espinaca, Sandwrack, Springsteel, Prince Farthing, Sazerac, Colonial Belle, Defier, Jimmy Sutro, Crystal Prince, Sir Melton, Texas Knight, Flaunt and others for the Trial, and with such an array of starters the race will be second only to the Louisiana Derby in the way of events for three-year-olds run during the meeting. Along with Lucky Tom, which will be returned here immediately after filling his Hialeah Park engagement, others that may come from Miami for the Louisiana Derby Continued on eighteenth page. The Greentree Stables Espinaca, first invader for the race to reach the Fair Grounds, came out of his fine effort and second to Sazerac at three-quarters here yesterday in fine condition, and trainer J. S. Middleton looks for him to prove a formidable contender for Derby honors. Sazerac suffered no ill effects from his smart, fast and triumphant performance over the Greentree colt and others. While weights for the Louisiana Derby are determined by conditions, imposts for the Derby Trial will be established by handicap and this assures a close matching of the field for the final important Derby preliminary. A. fee of 0 must accompany each subscription for the Trial and starters pay 5 additional to the Winner. Weights will be posted next Wednesday. The Derby, closed for nominations at the nominal charge of 5 each on January 30, remains open for supplemental entries at 00 each until March 5. Several recent fine developments among the three-year-olds at Hialeah Park may be among those named through supplementary subscription. They may include G. D. Wideners brilliant filly, Evening, which won the mile Deland Handicap at that Miami course Tuesday.
