MINTON SHANDON CANDIDATE Chicago Racing Organisation Names Son of Angon for Derby. John Partridge Pleased With Appearance of Burning Blaze Respess-Bred Juveniles Feat. LOUISVILLE, Ky., Feb. 17. Minton, by Angon Mint Drop, a member of the second division of the Shandon Farm Stable, was named for the Kentucky Derby, to be decided May 7. Minton won six races last year, one a stake, and showed great form at the fall meeting at Latonia. He will be conditioned by T. L. Pierce, who will send Minton down from Lexington along with other of his charges to get his final preparation over the Churchill Downs course. Other thoroughbreds being trained by Mr. Pierce for the Shandon Farm Stable, include Dandy Dan, Zean, Full Up, Allegretto, Laila Wild, Upset Ann Sad Knight and Ramon Hills. The two-year-olds of this division include the bay colt by My Play, bay "colt by Flying Ebony, bay colt by Sun Flag, bay filly by Cherokee, brown colt by Under Fire and bay filly by Sir Peter. John Partridge, who has charge of the main division of the Shandon Farm Stable, will devote most of his time this spring to preparing Burning Blaze for the Kentucky Derby. Mr. Partridge has just returned to New Orleans after a visit to the Shandon Farm, near Lexington, and he was highly pleased with Burning Blazes appearance. That the son of Big Blaze Mexican Tea has thrived during the open winter at Shandon Farm is the report coming from many critics who have recently seen the colt. Burning Blaze was a sensational two-year-old and won six races last season, including three stakes. Jake Lowenstein, who will train the thoroughbreds of Albert Sabath, of Chicago, and several of his own this season, has been at Churchill Downs for the last few days get- j ting his stable in order for the. reception of fourteen young horses, as well as Mr. Sab-aths Derby and Oaks candidate, I Say. His assistant trainer Hosea Sells has three of his own in training. Old Copperfield looks fine. Mr. Sells calls the old racer his meal ticket. But there is a two-year-old filly in this stable Mr. Sells considers the best prospect he has had in years. She is brown and by Boot to Boot, from Moorland Melody, named Boots Melody. One of the first of the Boot to Boots to race, this filly has all the ear-marks of a first-class racer. She is owned by George Geir, of Chicago, who will race his horses under the nom de course of the Moorland Stable this season. Another two-year-old in Mr. Sells charge is Woody Simon, a bay gelding by Tall Timber, from Simons Kiss. Rome Respess, veteran horseman and breeder, was highly pleased when he heard the results of the "baby race" at Hialeah Park recently. The first three youngsters at the finish were the products of his Highland Stock Farm, near Elanger, Ky. Mike Reynolds and Hildur Rock are by his stock horse, Hildur, and the third horse, Rome Vennie, is by Colonel Vennie, his prize sire. When a breeder can accomplish that feat he has a right to feel proud. The first two were sold in the paddock at Latonia last fall for almost a song. Rome Vennie was purchased in private by Lloyd Gentry for Harry C. Hatch, well-known Canadian turfman.
