RAPID CHANGE IN TRACK 1 1 c footing at New Orleans Becomes Fast for Feature Race. i fustinian Makes It Two Straight in Monogram Pictures Purse Cloudy "Weather Prevails. t t NEW ORLEANS, La., Feb. 24. A small i field of older sprinters started in the Mono- E gram Pictures Trophy, the feature race at t 1 the Fair Grounds today, and it resulted in a .victory for Mrs. Payne Whitneys Justinian. Angry carried the colors of C. V. Whitney v into second place and W. A. Hangers Rusty, i winner of his previous three engagements 2 2. and a big favorite to make it four straight t today, finished third, leading Tannery by a jiose. Elizabeth Bolla completed the quintet, t The track, good for the earlier contests, z was fast for the running of the feature and, f While the field was small, the race was one of the most interesting of the afternoon. I First Rusty, then Angry and in the late f stages, the winner, enjoyed the lead. Rusty j galloped the first quarter in :23 as he led the ultimate winner by a short margin and Angry occupied third place. Rusty re- i tained the lead to the end of the next quarter over Angry, the favorite, and was forced to run the distance in :47. . Shortly after reaching the stretch Angry wrested the lead from the Hanger gelding and Jus- tinian, which H. R. Riley took back slightly 1 on the turn, went to the extreme outside ; for the run through the stretch. Before the j victor attained his best speed for the final chase, Angry succeeded in drawing clear, but Justinians rush swept him out of the 1 lead and into defeat by a length in the last ; fifty yards. Here Rusty, which slowly gave i ground during the drive, just managed to : outstay Tannery, while Elizabeth Bolla was i far back from start to finish. MAKES FAST TIME. Justinian sprinted the distance in 1:12 : and the triumph marked the second in successive starts for the six-year-old son of i Ordinance. He paid 0.40 for . Cloudy and mild weather ruled and the Jpatronage was good. Dr. Rogers, at 92.40 for , the largest odds of the season, nosed out Red Vest, which shared favoritism with the dull performing Graphite, in the opening race, which brought together twelve three-year-olds at six furlongs. Showing improved form over recent efforts, the winner, ridden by J. Sylvester, wore down Red Vest in a see-saw drive that engaged the pair throughout the final three-sixteenths. Red Vest got to the front an eighth out, but the winner would not be denied and in the final strides headed the former, as Grey Lock outstayed .Uprise for third place. Graphite failed to prove a formidable factor at any time while Strathcona and Motive tired badly after showing speed to the stretch. RAGGED START. The second race, marked by a ragged start in which A. -Pelleteris Twisted Threads, the winner, had a decided advantage and some rough riding brought a claim of .foul by J. Burke, who rode Prometheus, which finished second against C. Landolt, who handled the victor. After wearing down Forget Not, which cut out most of the pace and accounted for third honors, JTwisted Threads was taken to the inside before Prometheus, which was going stoutly, could get through along the rail nearing the final one of the six furlongs and Twisted .Threads was not endangered by Prometheus in the concluding stages. After due deliberation, the stewards disallowed Burkes claim. At the stretch turn, Uma, third choice to Prometheus and the winner, was taken back at a time when she appeared to lack room between the winner and rail. She finished fourth. In a stirring finish and after standing off La Contessa for three-sixteenths of a mile, Mrs. M. B. Prices Gloritone, a daughter of The Porter and Slow and Easy, captured the major award in the third race, a three-eighths test for maiden two-year-olds, under claiming conditions. At the finish she led La Contessa by a head, and the latter in turn had only a nose over Copley Square, Which closed fastest of all and brought the two leaders into serious jeopardy in the final fifty yards. Just Umber, which finished fourth, weakened after reaching third place the inside and was a length back of the ?in ightly grouped leaders at the end. Gloritone, ridden by J. Burke, found istrong backing and ran the distance in L 1X35.
