PHAR LAP IN SPECIAL TRIAL AGUA CALIENTE, Mexico, Feb. 24. Phar Lap today, in place of his regular morning gallop, was given a blazing, hair-raising American style workout. Trainer T. Woodcock asked the Australian champion for his speed, selecting the six furlong distance. Jockey E. J. Martin was up. Any attempt to guess the weight he carried would only prove mere conjecture owing to the difference in construction of Australian saddles. Heres the way Phar Laps amazing work was recorded: Quarter in :24, three-eighths in :36, half mile in :48, five furlongs in 1:00, eased up three-quarters in 1:13. At no time was Phar Lap under pressure. He dashed along in mighty bounds without effort. When pulled up he wasnt faking a long breath.
