Plan to Name Their Charges for Washington Parks Features American. Derby Outstanding Attraction. LOUISVILLE, Ky., Feb. 24. Owners of the majority of the twelve colts, fillies and geldings that are eligible for the Kentucky Derby, which are at the local tracks, will nominate their respective three-year-olds for the Washington Park feature, the American Derby. Nominations close to this 0,000 added one mile and a quarter race, together with the six other stakes or handicaps that will be decided during the thirty-day meeting at the Chicago track, Wednesday, March In all there will be 0,000 in added money to these turf events. The Washington Park Handicap is for three-year-olds and over, six furlongs, ,000 added; the Debutante Stakes, two-year-old fillies, five and one-half furlongs, has an added value of ,000; the Thomas Curran Memorial, two-year-old colts and geldings, five and one-half furlongs, is also a ,000 added feature, and the Robert M. Sweitzer Handicap, three-year-olds and over, one and one-eighth miles, is the last of the ,000 added offerings. j Two 0,000 added fixtures, the Illinois Oaks, for three-year-old fillies, one and one-eighth mile, and the Francis S. Peabody Memorial Handicap, three-year-olds and over, one and one-quarter miles, rounds out this tempting list of the six highly prized and valuable feature offerings. The American Derby was inaugurated in 1884 and was won that year by the late Edward Cor-rigans filly, Modesty. In 1888 "Lucky" Baldwins Emperor of Norfolk was the winner, and in 1893, the year of the Worlds Fair in Chicago, Boundless was the winner after the longest delay at the post that has ever marked the running of this event. It is said that the late "Snapper" Garrison, who rode Boundless, rested one foot on the inside rail, keeping the weight off his mount during the better part of the time that the field was at the post and practically had a fresh horse as the barrier was released and the field was sent on its journey. Spokane, conqueror of the great Louisville owned gelding, Proctor Knott, in the Kentucky Derby, was later returned winner of the American Derby. The Proctor Knott and Spokane Derby aroused more local interest than any Derby that has been decided in years, and the Sam Bryant gelding was beaten only a nose by Spokane in one of the most gruelling finishes ever witnessed in the race at the Downs. Louisville gained the honors in 1903 when The Picket, owned by Middleton and Jungbluth, won the American Derby, and last year A. C. Bostwicks Mate just kept Louisville from again carrying off the honors in this event when he beat Theo. E. Muellers Pittsburgher by a nose. Reveille Boy created a sensation in 1930 when he won the American Derby from a crack band and paid the longest price ever hung up in the mutuels by a winner of this race.
