LONG BRANCH OPENS TODAY Last of Spring Meetings at Torontos Mile Tracks to Begin Under Auspicious Conditions. FI TORONTO, Ont., June 7.— Everything is in readiness for the opening today at Long C Branch. This will be the final seven-day meeting of the spring season over the mile tracks in the Toronto district. Long Branch has never looked prettier than it does at the present time. Landscape artists have been busy beautifying the plant, hundreds of weeping willow and maple trees have been transplanted throughout the grounds, while ci the comfort of the patrons has been looked after in the arranging of many benches in the newly built park south of the paddock. Never in the history of the Lake Shore course has there been so many good performers on hand to take part in the meeting as there are at this time. Many owners are taking in the meeting for the first time, such stables as C. V. Whitney, S. W. Labrot, Cary T. Grayson, Desha Breckinridge and others, J names that mean something in American racing. An innovation will be tried out in the ladies mutuel plant, when a lady ticket seller will take care of the wants oi all the fair sex who are speculatively inclined. There are two newcomers to the official family. Sam Rothert will take the place left vacant by the death of M. N. MacFarlane. F Rothert is well known locally by o!d timers, having formerly raced a string of thoroughbreds in partnership with the late Michael Gorman, of Ottawa. He arrived from San Bruno, Calif., where he had officiated at the Tanforan meeting. Lou Marsh, for years one . of the outstanding sport authorities, and sporting editor of the Toronto Daily Star, has also been secured and will serve as p one of the placing judges. Horsemen who are vanning to Long Branch to take part in any race from other courses are notified to report immediately on arrival to the paddock judge in the paddock. The program that racing secretary Wash Norvell has arranged for opening day is the equal of the best that local race-goers have S had a chance of witnessing this season.
