WESTYS FOX A REPEATER « Earns Second Straight Purse Under Nertney at Bainbridge. Martins Croney Triumphs Over Good Band in Fourth — Decline Outstanding Surprise of the Day. • CLEVELAND, Ohio, June 8.— A. J. Gadeks Westys Fox and jockey W. Nertney proved a winning combination in the Country Club Purse, fifth race, which attracted the best field at Bainbridge Park this afternoon. It marked the second success at this meeting for the gray son of Westy Hogan and he never left the result in serious doubt. He was installed favorite and his victory was popular. Marcelet made up considerable ground in the last half and eventually out-gamed Inferno Lad in the final drive for second. The races were run over a fast track and under favorable conditions. A good midweek day crowd was in attendance. Falmouth Belle showed the way until well into the stretch in the initial race. A furlong out Algol challenged, followed by Wega and the latter pair reached the finish under hard urging, Algol earning a close decision by a neck. After racing on the outside of her opponents most of the distance, Winona Lady, the favored one, secured the minor award in a hard drive. Falmouth Belle tired badly. Somewhat of a sensation came when Decline, a despised outsider won the second race in a driving finish from Zembla and Usurp, the trio reaching the end closely lapped. Decline passed Tennywood, the pacemaker approaching the stretch turn, taking a comfortable lead. Zembla and Prince Tommy both came fast during the run home and Zembla was going the fastest of the trio at the finish. Tennywood, the favorite, quit badly. A mishap came with the running of this race. As the field was entering the back stretch, Bourbonite appeared to break down suddenly, unseating jockey W. Prior. The lad suffered a badly cut scalp and was rushed to St. Alexis Hospital. Otherwise, he did not appear to be badly injured. When captured, it developed that Bourbonite had broken the left foreleg at the ankle and had to be destroyed. Beginning better today, Main Attack displayed the most speed at all stages of the third rafce but during the final drive was hard pressed to score by a narrow margin over Hugue and Sudie B. It was a rousing finish. Hugue came with a brilliant burst of speed next to the inner rail in the final furlong and would have scored in a few more strides. Moms Mary was a factor until midway in the stretch, then tired. After wresting the lead from Cloudy inside the final furlong post, Martins Croney was forced to put forth his best effort in the final stages of the fourth race, to retain a neck margin over the fast finishing Don Pablo. Cloudy was tiring rapidly at the end and barely saved the minor award from the resolutely finishing Timber Man. Tortway, the popular choice, left the barrier slowly and never recovered.
