ECONOMIC SERIOUS THREAT FOR AMERICAN DERBY a g i . DANGEROUS ELIGIBLE ♦ Reported in Fine Condition and Training Well for Big Race. ♦ ~ Sunmelus, Osculator and Mad Pursuit Latest Derby Candidates to Arrive at Washington Park. • HOMEWOOD, 111., June 8.— Economic, J. H. Louchheims good three-year-old son of Infinite, which finished second to Burgoo King in the Kentucky Derby and last Saturday accounted for the Ohio State Derby, had his first serious training gallop since his impressive Bainbridge Park performance when he breezed three-quarters, over a good track, at Washington Park this morning. In the easy, beneficial trial the crack eastern invader for the 0,000 added American Derby to be renewed at Washington Park one week from Saturday, was timed in l:lt%, the half mile in :53. Trainer Clarence Buxton has Economic in the most brilliant condition of his career and, barring accident, this formidable eastern threat will reach the American Derby post in superb fettle. He has an army of admirers, many among the horsemen at Washington Park, and his light work drew the undivided attention of horsemen and early morning visitors at the Homewood course. He is considered as a dangerous candidate for the big race. Evening, G. D. Wideners great filly, excepted, Economic was the first of the eastern three-year-olds after American Derby honors to reach the local track. This afternoon Sunmelus, owned by Willis Sharpe Kilmer; Osculator, property of W. R. Coe, and Walter J. Salmons Mad Pursuit were added to the growing galaxy of three-year-old giants for the great Washington Park race. Sunmelus, Osculator and Mad Pursuit were shipped from Belmont Park. OTHER STARS DUE SATURDAY. A number of others including Faireno, William Woodwards winner of the Belmont Stakes last Saturday; Mrs. L. G. Kaufmanns On Post; A. C. Schwartz Gusto; Walter M. Jef fords Boatswain; Mrs. John Hay Whitneys Stepenfetchit, and, possibly, C. V. Whitneys Top Flight, later will augment the invading contingent. Evening has been at Washington Park for ten days, her early arrival being arranged so that she might fill an engagement in the Illinois Oaks, which was run last Saturday. On the morning of the Oaks she suffered slight injuries when she struck one of the track railings after unseating her rider and the injuries resulted in her withdrawal from the filly stake. Top Flight may be among the starters in the American Derby and it is believed by Col. M. J. Winn and his associates that should she win the Coaching Club American Oaks, at a mile and three-eighths, at Belmont Park tomorrow, she will be shipped to Washington Park for the Derby engagement. On the strength of her trials for the Belmont Park feature, last years champion two-year-old seems to have found her best form and is a real threat for the three-year-old crown. T. J. Healey, trainer of the filly, is highly pleased with her condition, according to word received at Washington Park. «
