ORMESBY HANDICAP WINNER Woodward Racer Outstays Waterway Aftpr Hard Stretch Drive. Ordinary Program at Aqueduct Course-Semaphore Scores in Second Race Peturnal Surprises in Opener. NEW YORK, N. Y., June 20. In a card of overnight races, the best offering of the Queens County Jockey Club at Aqueduct today was the Olambala Handicap. It resulted in an excellent finish in which William Woodwards Ormesby was the winner after a drive with Frank Grossmans Waterway, with J. A. Bests Reveille Boy, top weight of the field, saving third easily from Mountain Elk, the starter from the Anall Stable. The only other starter was W. L. Johnsons Rip "Van Winkle. Racing conditions were perfect and the crowd was a surprisingly large one, with no special feature. The track was fast and excellent contests occurred. In the Olambala the start was a good one and Mills at once took command with Ormesby. Mountain Elk and Reveille Boy followed him closely and Rip Van Winkle was showing the way to Waterway. Never surrendering the lead, Mills set a fast pace with the son of Sir Gallahad TJI. and he made it fast enough to take considerable out of Mountain Elk by the time the stretch was reached. There the son of Apprehension dropped back, while Wholey went wide with Reveille Boy, at the loss of some ground, to run into second place. An eighth out Reveille Boy was going so well that he looked the winner, for Ormesby was doing his best. But Gilbert had saved ground with Waterway on the stretch turn and when he found room to go through he was soon in contention. In the final eighth Reveille Boy tired badly under his 126 Continued on second page. ORMESBY HANDICAP WINNER Continued from first page. pounds and dropped back badly, but Waterway continued to gain. His challenge was a determined one, but Ormesby struck it out to be the winner by a neck. Waterway was two lengths before Reveille Boy and Mountain Elk was another four lengths back, with Rip Van Winkle last. Fifteen maiden juveniles made up the field for the opening five furlongs race, and it brought a close finish when Peturnal, from the Barry Vail Stable, led Mrs. T. J. Lewis Fingal past the line, while Leo J. Marks Marvan saved third from Samuel D. Riddles Octaroro. Peturnal, beginning well, dominated all the race and hung on with rare gameness in the final furlong to out-finish Fingal. The latter raced well and had little excuse, tiring in the final drive. Mar-van raced well all the way and saved third from Octaroro by a length and a half. Before the start Fingal ran off for a furlong and it may have had some effect on his race. The start, while a fair one, was followed almost at once by crowding, and American Joy, Friscoville and Bonsoir were all pulled up to have no chance in the running. When little Coucci appeared in the parade riding the Greentree Stables Semaphore in the "second race, he was given hearty applause for his victory with M. L. Schwartz Gusto in the American Derby Saturday. . Then, in the running of the race, he further merited the applause when, under a masterly ride, he earned a close decision with the son of Pennant over C. Harvey Pierces War Plane and J. W. Mays Charleigh. The only other starter was Miss Blanche Watsons First Mission, and he was beaten all the way. Ship Ablaze was an easy winner of the fifth, a five furlong race for juvenile fillies. She led home Mrs. Sadie Bennets Via Appia, with Willis Sharpe Kilmers Sun Fabric saving third from Maebee. The daughter of Man o War left in full stride and, racing along on the inner rail all the "way, predominated from start to finish and, crossing the line, she was five lengths clear. Lazy Daisy and Sun Fabric closely lapped, followed the winner, but both weakened in the final sixteenth. No definite plans have been made for M. L. Schwartz Gusto. The horse came out of his race in perfect condition. Gusto is named for all of the important three-year-old events remaining to be run.
