PLAYFOLE OUTRUNS ARGOSVIE Burch Filly Defeats American Flags Sister in Close Finish. Gazelle Stakes Heads List of Aqueducts Attractions Jamison Accounts for the Frances Cohan Handicap. NEW YORK, N. Y., June 28. Selby B. Burchs Playfole upset calculations at Aqueduct yesterday when in a game finish she was winner of the Gazelle Stakes, which attracted three other three-year-old fillies. The prize had a net value of ,500 to the winner and it was the Glen Riddle Farm Stables Argosie, a sister to American Flag, which raced into second place, with the Greentree Stables Parry beating the Wheat-ley Stables Unique, the only other starter. The start in the Gazelle was a good one and Mills, as is his custom, at once went out to show the way with Unique. Argosie was in second place and Playfole third, while Kurtsinger permitted Parry to drop back rather badly and then made a move on the inside to run into a bit of trouble. Unique held a lead that saw her clear of the other fillies until well into the stretch. There Kurtsinger attempted to bring Parry through on the inside and, while he was accepting the worst of the going, Mills went over with Unique until the daughter of Peter Pap had scant racing room. In the meantime Hanford chose the outside with Playfole and when Argosie caught the tiring Parry, the daughter of My Play was right with her and in a close finish it was Playfole that had her head in front. Parry had readily disposed of the tired Unique, but she was two lengths back and Unique, after her early exhibition of speed, was, a distant last. Jamison was winner of the Frances Cohan Handicap over Delicacy, with Portden a close third before Spinach. Jamison caused some delay at the post, but the start was a good one, with Spinach more alert than the others, Elston rushing him out until he was well clear of his opponents. Portden was in second place, and Jamison was third, with Rip Van Winkle showing the way" to Delicacy. This order was maintained until the Continued on twenty-first page. PLAYFOLE OUTRUNS ARG0SVIE ! Continued from first page. stretch was reached. There Gilbert swung Jamison to the outside of Portden and Spinach, and he quickly moved into contention. He had .found his way into the lead a . furlong from the finish and, hanging on gamely, was still half a length to the good at the end. Delicacy had finished with a great burst of speed to beat Portden for second place by a neck, and Spinach had quit so badly that he was a length and a half back of the son of The Porter. Rip Van Winkle had cut scant figure to finish last of the five. Heart Break proved easily best in the opener when she dominated all the running to win by a wide margin over Bora. Third went to Exiled. The start was a poor one when Flighty Anna, from the outside stall, swerved in badly and Shady Girl bore out as a result, there was some piling up. Heart Break had the inside stall and she left in full stride. Mann sent her along the shortest way on the inner rail and she was clear all the way to be the winner by five lengths. Bora and Exiled were always in the front division and they staged an exciting duel for second place with Bora proving the gamer when she saved that part of the award by a head. Emergency Aid was a fast closing fourth to be well lapped on Exiled. The short course steeplechase brought a surprise when William Almy, Jr.s Citron was the winner, with the Brookmeade Stables Rooney second, and Thomas Hitchcocks Chenango third. J. Howard Lewis Sun Wrack was a distant fourth, and Joseph E. Wideners Taurus II., after cutting out most of the pace, went down at the last fence when in a contending position. Fortunately, H. Little, who had the mount, escaped injury. The start was a good one, and Taurus II. at once moved into the lead with Little trying vainly to take him back. Chenango was in second place, but McKinney eased him back from that position and then came Citron and Rooney closely lapped while Sun Wrack had scant speed and was soon a distant trailer. Taurus II. held to his lead until the back field was reached, the last turn of the course. There Citron moved up strongly drawing out into a lead of half dozen lengths. Taurus II. was doing his best in second place and Chenango was just showing the way to Rooney. This was the order of the field as the fence was reached. There Taurus H. made his mistake and went down, while Citron galloped home an easy winner by eight lengths. Chenango was under a furious drive from the last fence home, but Rooney proved the gamer when he won the place by a nose. Sun Wrack, after having raced last all the way, was thirty lengths back of these. Dynastic had to be much the best to be winner of the fifth. He scored over White Thorn, and Big Leaguer was an easy third before Bodkin. Miss Alden and Crap Shooter were rushed right along after the advantage they enjoyed at the break, but before the stretch was reached both were showing signs of tiring. When the stretch was reached it was Big Leaguer that had taken command, and liurtsinger had Dynastic on the outside and was under a hard drive after having lost considerable ground. White Thorn had saved ground and then both Miss Alden and Crap Shooter tired, while Dynastic, responded to Kurtsingers drive, came away right at the end to be the winner by a length and a half. White Thorn, in a game finish, beat Big Leaguer by half a. length for second place, and Bodkin ran over the tiring Crap Shooter and Miss Alden.
