i . i : ; THREE SARATOGA FEATURES Travers Midsummer Derby Today, With Gusto Giving Weight to Several Rivals. SARATOGA SPRING, N. Y., Aug. 1C With the Travers Midsummer Derby, the Spinaway Stakes and the Beverwyck Steeplechase Handicap all down for decision tomorrow, the week-end racing of the Saratoga Association will be of particular interest. The Travers, by reason of its history, is the special of greatest sporting importance, but unfortunately some of the best of the three-year-olds are either not eligible or not in training at this time. The most notable of the eligibles named through the entry box is Morten L. Schwartz Gusto, winner of the American Derby and the Classic, in which he took the measure of both Faireno and Top Flight. By reason of these victories the son of American Flag is required to take up his weight of 126 pounds and he has to give away weight to every other starter. Mrs. John Hay Whitneys Stepenfetchit has to shoulder 123 pounds and W. R. Coes Oscu-lator takes up 120 pounds. With Faireno ineligible, Pardee will carry the silks of the chairman of The Jockey Club and he is in under 115 pounds, with Willis S. Kilmers Sunmelus, the Greentree Stables Semaphore, W. R. Coes Laughing Queen, Samuel D. Riddles War Hero and the Brookmeade Stables Monday, The Travers is one of the oldest of American classics and is a test of a mile and a quarter for three-year-olds exclu- sively. Happy Gal, William Woodwards daughter of Sir Gallahad in., winner of the Juvenile Stakes, Flash Stakes and the Saratoga Special, and C. V. Whitneys swift running Disdaintful are at the top of this company, each being required to take up 127 pounds, eight over scale weight. It is a big burden, but they have shown a quality that earns that high weight. B. B. Jones Hilena, winner of the Lassie Stakes, has penalties, with 124 pounds as her burden. Sunny Queen, W. R. Coes sister to Pompey, is another of the company and with Speed Boat, Iseult, Crazy Jane, Barn Swallow, Edelweiss and Wary, she carries 115 pounds. The others are in under allowances that bring the weight down to 111 pounds and there is sure to come an excellent renewal of the prize. Only six are named in the Beverwyck Steeplechase and of these E. R. Bradleys Barbmeter is at the top with 155 pounds. J. E. Widener is represented by Indigo at , 143 and Rosedale H. to carry the feather of 133 pounds. The Greentree hope is Jack Anthony, which takes up 138 pounds and the remaining one of the company is Mrs. F. Ambrose Clarks Hamptonian and his weight is 137 pounds. Unless there should come more rain before post time there is an excellent chance that the going will be fast.
