FAIRENO SHOWS HIGH SPEED , Works Half Mile in :46, Three-Quarters in 1:12, EasedUp. Jockey Malley "Due Today and Will Ride Easterner In Hawthorne Cup Mate and Gusto Expected Today. CICERO, 111., Aug. 24. With the withdrawal of Equipoise from the Hawthorne Gold Cup due to sickness, the big race, to be decided Saturday, becomes a rather open affair with Faireno, winner of the Hawthorne Handicap, likely to go postward the favorite. Faireno, which arrived at the Cicero course Tuesday after a fast trip from Saratoga, added to his admirers by an exceptionally fast move this morning. The colt, sent out to work one mile, half of it for speed, dazzled the watch holders by flying the first three-eighths in :33 and the half mile in :46. He went the five-eighths in :59 and, after being flagged down by trainer Tappan, went the three-quarters in 1:12. It was not only Fairenos speed, but the ease with which he turned in the trial that impressed the onlookers. He looked and acted every inch the superior three-year-old that past performances have proved him to be and all agreed that the horse that defeats him on Saturday would take home the major portion of the 5,000 added purse. Jockey Tommy Malley, who has ridden Faireno in all his important races, will arrive from the East Friday and will have the mount on the Woodward colt in Saturdays contest. Mate, main rival of Twenty Grand for the three-year-old honors last season; and Gusto, winner of the American Derby and Arlington Classic, left Saratoga at noon today bound for the battle scene. They will arrive tomorrow. It will be Mates second crack at the Hawthorne Gold Cup, he having finished second to Sun Beau last season. Sylvio Coucci, sensational eastern apprentice, will have the mount on Gusto, while a pilot for Mate has not yet been selected. Other candidates to work this morning were Sidney Grant, from the stable of Abe Bartelstein, which stepped one and one-quarter miles in 2:11, and the Superior Stables Cliarleigh, which went the same distance in 2:07. Both worked handily.
