BILLY CHAMP LOWERS RECORD Runs Abt. Mile and Forty Yards in 1:40, Defeating Low Gear. Deemster Finishes Third in Feature at Dade Park Prince Farthing Is Failure in the Opening Race. HENDERSON, Ky Aug. 24 . Billy Champ, five-year-old Hourless gelding, carried E. Haughtons white and green colors to a very popular victory and in track record time in the third race at Dade Park here today. Only four opposed the Haughton racer at the Dade Park course distance of approximately one mile and forty yards, but in run-the route in 140, three-fifths of. a second faster than the previous time, Billy Champ crushed his rivals. He ran home five lengths before Low Gear, with Deemster filling third position. Druggist and Judge Peak completed the field. With the skillful Gilbert Elston in the saddle and, benefiting through a lack of stern early contention, Billy Champ experienced no trouble once he attained command leaving the chute and all stages of the closing half mile found him far in front. During the run through the stretch Low Gear succeeded in wearing down Deemster, while Druggist failed to prove a threat with a tardy charge. He trailed far back for three-quarters, then swung into stride and, after closing some ground, was a short length ! away from Deemster at the wire. Weather and track conditions were most propitious for fast time and, while all of the seven races were fashioned for platers, the performers stepped along briskly. A con- j tinuation of the almost torrid weather, which developed yesterday, again failed to hold down the attendance and speculation j was good. The opening race resulted in a mild surprise and the complete rout of the favorite, Prince Farthing. Nine of the most inferior older platers accepted the issue here and ; the winner turned up in A. Eastbns Wise Cross, on which J. McCoy had the mount. She gamely outstayed Aristocrat, winning by a neck, with Dis Dame third, two lengths back and a nose before the betting choice, which failed to reach the leaders with a belated charge. The victory marked the first for the winner, a three-year-old daughter of Wise Counsellor and Purple Cross. McCoy rode his second winner in as many races when he drove W. W. Vaughans Little Goblin under the wire a nose before Remuneration in the five and one-half furlongs second race, for maiden juvenile fillies. Lotus Bud was only a nose behind Remuneration, and with Pink Slipper fourth, only a neck back of Lotus Bud, the finish rivalled any during the meeting, and so narrow was the winners margin over Remuneration that only the placing judges could determine the result. Little Goblin was indulged with all the pacemaking, and after reaching the final furlong a length before Remuneration, withstood a long, hard drive in keeping ahead of the E. Haughton filly. Interference prevented Eva Jane and Sizzling from showing to best" advantage. Three veterans of many turf contests carried off the honors in the three-quarters fourth race when Shasta Lad, Estin and Gracious Gift finished first, second and third as named before the six others under colors. Under an alert ride by D. Meade, Shasta Lad was good enough to win easily after making all the pace, while Estin had a. final advantage of two lengths over Grar cious Gift, favorite. The latter, along with Sporting Lady and Norias, suffered interference in the stretch, where Estin bore over. Kirby Ramsey has refused teveral offers for the two-year-old Chestnut Tree, which made his first appearance under colors Tuesday. He is the property of Judge James P. Edwards of Louisville.
