LATONIA CHAMPIONSHIP AND PIMUCO FUTURITY e Two of Richest Races of Fall Season Down for Decision Today Kentucky Feature for Three-Year-Olds Worth 0,-000 Maryland Fixture for Juveniles Exceeds 0,000 Large Crowds to View Contests LATONIA, Ky., Nov. 4 The Latonia Championship Stakes, the Latonia Jockey Clubs great fall fixture for three-year-olds and Americas richest autumn event for horses older than two years, comes up here tomorrow for its fourteenth running in as many years. Seven, headed by M. L.. Schwartz Gusto, the largest purse winner of the year; Norman W. Churchs Gallant Sir, and C. V. Whitneys Mad Frump, were named for the one mile and three-quarters prize and, if all face the starter, the race will have a gross value of 0,555. Although Gusto is expected to rule fa-forite, the race has more of an open aspect than any since Rolled Stockings beat Woolridge, Brown Bud and others in 1927. A dull track and strong probability of rain added uncertainty as the thoroughly conditioned stars and lesser lights seeking the prize were put away on the" eve of the Championship combat. With anything like a favorable brand of weather, the race is certain to bring out a tremendous crowd. For some time it has been discussed from all angles and its importance and the prospects of a spectacular contest has sent to the highest figure in two years requests for special or reserved accommodations for the day. Scores of visitors from points throughout the country will be here and if the sun shines the occasion may be one not soon to be forgotten by those privileged to witness the battle of this small but brilliant field of three-year-olds. Credited with victories over every contender for the division championship but Burgoo King, the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes winner, the crack Gusto, winner of the American Derby, Arlington Classic and other stakes and fixtures, may be awarded the championship crown with a victory in tomorrows race. Max Hirsch, trainer of the son of American Flag and Daylight Savings, has put him through a long, slow and special preparation for this engagement and, barring freak or bad luck, should have no excuse for his brilliant charge. During the weeks that Gusto has been away from competition Gallant Sir and Mad Frump have surged upward until now both are within reach of the title. Gallant Sir recently defeated the marvelous Equipoise, champion of the older handicap division, and in his last start experienced much trouble defeating Mad Frump, which only a short time before had been returned victorious over Twenty Grand and others very much in the limelight. Rehoboth, owned by J. Fred Adams; H. P. Headleys Big Beau, C. T. Fishers Cee Tee .and J. F. ONeils Quando complete the overnight field. Quando is not expected to start, but Rehoboth and Big Beau, which, like Gusto, Gallant Sir and Mad Frump, were shipped from the East within the last week, and Cee Tee will have the colors up. Gallant Sir, a son of Sir Gallahad III. and Sun Spot, and Cee Tee, a son of Polymelian and La Belle Helene, are the chief hopes of the West for its first success since 1927 and, while in the light of performances they Continued on sixteenth page. BALTIMORE, Md., Nov. 4 Twenty-three of the 1,794 eligibles for the Pimlico Futurity have been named to go to the post at the old course of the Maryland Jockey Club tomorrow. This prize, which is having its twelfth renewal, is second only to the Futurity of the Westchester Association in point of value and with such a field going to the post it will carry a gross value of 0,940. The distance is a mile and a sixteenth, and in the promised field will be found the names of all the outstanding juveniles that are still in training. Of these named three will be saddled by James Fitzsimmons in Iseult and Notebook, to race for the Wheatley Stable, and Balios to carry the H. C. Phipps silks. It is probable Notebook is best by reason of her easy victory in the Selima Stakes at the recent Laurel meeting. And in that connection it might be called to mind that the first winner of the Selima, William Duponts Fair Star, followed up that victory by winning the Pimlico Futurity. C. V. Whitney is represented by Caterwaul and The Darb, and both are colts of high quality. There has been a doubt of Caterwauls being able to carry on for a mile and a sixteenth by reason of his defeat in the Junior Champion at Aqueduct, but he is a colt of extreme speed, while The Darb has shown an ability to carry on over a route. The Darb proved himself adequately by his recent victory in the mile of the Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes at Latonia. Still another stable is that of Edward R. Bradley. His pair are Bold Lover and Barn Swallow, and both have shown flashes of class on occasions, though they apparently do not rate with the best. W. R. Coe has as his pair Pompet and Pomponius, a pair of the get of Pompey, and have trained well for the test. James F. Johnsons Repaid seems to have the call over the distance, This fellow came into his first fame this year when he was winner of the Junior Champion over two such good colts as Caterwaul and Kerry Patch, winner of the Futurity at Belmont Park. Then there is F. Griffiths Sarada, which won the Spalding Lowe Jenkins Handicap at Laurel from a big field of the best. Lee Rosenbergs Kerry Patch will have another opportunity to wipe out his two defeats by Repaid, and the Greentree Stables Dynastic, winner of the Champagne Stakes, is another that will go to the post. It is truly unfortunate that Willis Sharpe Kilmer lost his ace for the prize when Sun Archer wrenched his back in the running of the Spalding Lowe Jenkins. There was a hope he would be brought to the post, but the New York sportsman will have to depend on Sun Captor, another son of Sun Briar. R. A. Smith is depending on Inlander, Continued on sixteenth page. In his last appearance here Cec Tee outraced Mad Frump through sloppy going. While Big Beau and Quando added little strength to the home forces, the chances for the West to block the East in its quest of a fifth victory in successive runnings are considered the best since the fixture assumed an eastern complex. Trainer Hirsch is bringing on H. Callahan to ride Gusto, while E. Legere will guide Mad Frump and R. Finnerty will have the leg up on Rehoboth, which rounds out the invading trio. G. Woolf will ride Gallant Sir, with C. Corbett on Big Beau and W. Fronk astride Cee Tee. If Quando should start, Li. McDermott will be in the saddle. Mad Hatter, sire of Mad Frump, was victorious in the first Championship Stakes back in 1919. Cleopatra, the lone filly successful in this great test, scored in 1920 and Sporting Blood garnered the next running. Rockminister was triumphant in 1922 and a year later In Memoriam asserted his greatness with a shocking victory over Zev, that led to a special match between the two at Churchill Downs. Running in world record time of 2:54 for the mile and three-quarters, Chilhowee was a sensational winner in 1924. Subsequent winners were King Nadi, 1925; Display, 1926; Rolled Stocking, 1927; Sun Beau, 1928; The Nut, 1929; Spinach, 1930, and St. Brideaux last year.
