REMOVE SAMS APPENDIX Former Star Rider Besting Easily After Operation at Roosevelt Hospital in New York. NEW YORK, N. Y.f Nov. 4 Earl Sande was operated upon for appendicitis yesterday by Dr. James Russell at the Roosevelt Hospital. The case was an emergency one and the operation was pronounced a success and the patient reported as well as could be expected. Sande was at Belmont Park following the close of the Empire City meeting, making arrangements to ship the horses of H. Maxwell Howard, of Dayton, Ohio, for whom he trains, to Bowie. He complained of pains on Wednesday and Thursday afternoon. Dr. Russell was consulted and diagnosed the ailment as appendicitis and recommended an immediate operation. Sande is no stranger to hospitals. At the height of his career as a rider, he suffered a severe fall at Saratoga and for months was a bed case. At that time, due to the nature of his injuries, it was thought that the career of the Idaho youngster as a race rider was terminated. He returned to the saddle during the spring meeting at Havre de Grace and rode Sarazen to an easy victory. The same year he contracted to ride for J. E. Widener and remained in that sportsmans employ until he announced his retirement as a rider. He then branched out as an owner and trainer, but later disposed of his horses and in the following year rode Gallant Fox to his impressive string of triumphs. Sande discarded his riding "tack" this fall and cancelled his jockey license and turned his attention to training the horses of H. Maxwell Howard. His many friends at Belmont Park were surprised at the news of the operation and many messages hoping for a speedy recovery were sent to his room at Roosevelt Hospital.
