HAGERSTOWN OPENING TODAY Fair Association Begins Spring Meeting With Splendid Program - Many Improvements Made. HAGERSTOWN, Md., May 31. Not since racing was revived in the fall of 1929 has interest been as keen as that being displayed over the spring meeting, which opens at 2:00 p; m., tomorrow. Although only fifty-six horses can get postward, owners of 160 thoroughbreds filed nominations today for the seven race opening program. Race secretary Edward J. Brennan and his staff did a perfect job in getting the entries out before noon, especially as there were many horses who heretofore never had the good fortune to have their names filed for a race. Harold E. Bester, son of the late Harry Edward Bester, the man who did much for racing in this city, is proving a capable general manager. He has had the field planted with shrubbery and flowers, the track made over into one of the best of its kind in the state, and given the entire plant an overhauling in anticipation of catering to a capacity crowd tomorrow. Numerous winners at the recent Bowie, Pimlico and Havre de Grace meetings are on the grounds and awaiting a chance to run for the purses of the Hagerstown Fair Association. Major General and General Lejeune, two Maryland favorites were named for tomorrows card but were unlucky in the draw and will have to wait for another days sport. Pari mutuel manager Mort Mahony had his iron men set up today by Walter Burke, and Walter Johnson, and everything is in readiness for a gala opening.
