MUD MAY NOT AFFECT FIELD Majority of Hawthorne Handicap Eligibles Able to Race in Any Sort of Footing. CICERO, 111., Aug. 3 Should there be more rain and the track remain muddy or heavy, racing secretary Joseph McLennan believes that it will have little affect on the size of the field starting in the ,000 Hawthorne Handicap Saturday, in which at least ten are expected to answer the bugle. Most of the eligibles can race in any kind of footing. Top weight in the Hawthorne Handicap is 124 pounds, which will be shared by Plucky Play and Gallant Sir, both representing Norman W. Church, and certain starters. D. A. Woods Indian Runner, winner of two stakes at the recent Arlington Park meeting, is next in line with 119 pounds. Others that are pointing definitely for the stake and have been training satisfactorily are Late Date, Waylayer, Bamboula, Sidney Grant, Polydorus. Esseff, Springsteel, Big Brand and Swivel, and if the track should remain muddy or heavy, some of the lesser lights among the thirty-four eligibles may be in the starting field. There is an excellent chance that in its seventh running the Hawthorne Handicap may be won for the first time by a mare. Swivel, Bamboula, Late Date and Esseff are five uncommonly good racers of that sex that are listed as probable starters.
