BELL CAP IS SUCCESSFUL Scores His First Victory of Year in Fifth at Thistle Down. Mad A. Leads Joan Pat and Madam Queen in Fleetwood Hotel Purse Fountain Captures Second. CLEVELAND, Ohio, Aug. 3. Mudlarks came into their own at Thistle Down today after the heavy downpour and although some of the winners came from unexpected quarters most of them were pronounced mud runners and were well supported. The fifth race, exclusively for three-year-olds, brought about the first victory of the year for Bell Cap running in the colors of J. Bronnenberg, Jr., and making his first start of the meeting. Apparently suited by the changed conditions, Bell Cap led E. B. Smiths Whizzing D. and Buds Choice. The fourth, a sprint for maidens, was won by the Strolling Player filly, First Act, which rar in the money in every start she made at Beulah Park, and therefore was well played today. Sister Madge, making her first start since the Bainbridge meeting, was second and the Master Charlie colt, Don Carlos, finished third. The Fleetwood Hotel, Miami Beach, Purse, at a mile and a sixteenth, was won by the Lucky Hour mare, Mad A., with Joan Pat second and Madam Queen third. Fountain made her first start of the meeting in the second race and, closing fast on the outside, got down in front of Dutch Uncle, which was running his first race since the Riverside meeting. The latter was thoroughly suited by the going and made a strong finish. Silverette was a tired third, after racing Odd Star into defeat. In the initial dash, Red Riot took the lead at once, with Hard Boiled and Cliftons Agnes following. This order was maintained throughout, Red Riot enjoying a comfortable lead all through the stretch. Hard Boiled was close up in the early stages but faltered nearing the end. Cliftons Agnes was a distant third but well in advance of the others. It was quite evident that she was unsuited by the track conditions.
