DRESSEN MUTUEL MANAGER Experienced Official to Have Charge of Wagering at Detroit Fair Grounds Plant. CICERO, 111., Aug. 10. Des Dressen, whose experience with the pari-mutuel system of betting stretches back through more than a score of years, will be in charge of the mutuel department at the State Fair Grounds, Detroit, during the inaugural meeting of the Detroit Racing Association opening Saturday, September 2, for a season of thirty-one days. Dressens appointment was announced Thursday by Joseph A. Murphy, director of racing at the Detroit track. Murphy also completed the staff of racing officials, naming Benny Jacobs, of Detroit, as paddock judge and one of the patrol judges, and A. Heffernan as timer. Dressen is already gathering a crew of competent men and will go to Detroit at least a week before the opening of the meeting. The clock system of closing the betting, which has been in vogue at Hawthorne for several years, will be used pending the working out of an economical and practical totalizer. Hawthorne has a complete model of such a device, which should be ready for installation next year at a cost within the reach of every association. Ben Miller, Hawthorne track superintendent, returned to Detroit last night and will remain there for a few days directing reconstruction of the racing strip. Anton Bezch-leba is in charge of the improvements. j8 f2
