LOYAL LOUIE BIG SURPRISE Takes Measure of Best Field Starting at .Thistle Down. Bain Threatens but Fails to Materialize in Cleveland Good Crowd Witnesses Days facing. CLEVELAND, Ohio, Aug: 10. G. P. Gallaghers Loyal Louie took the measure of the best field starting at Thistle Down Park this afternoon when he won the fifth with much to spare and furnished somewhat of a surprise. Beige and Donate divided the minor portions of the purse. Adrian and Beige alternated in the lead to the far turn, where jockey R. Klein sent Loyal Louie up on the outside. Once in command, the Axenstein gelding drew away decisively in the stretch. Beige was doing his best at the end to save second from Donate, which raced prominently throughout. Adrian -gave way after going six furlongs and the others were never serious factors. Rain threatened during much of the afternoon, the sky being heavily clouded, but the downpour failed to materialize. The track, although slow, was drying out rapidly, and the racing provided was decidedly interesting, featured by keen stretch struggles. A crowd of average mid-weekday proportions was in attendance. The promising apprentice, W. Hanka, piloted his seventh winner of the meeting out of twenty-one mounts, when he guided Venarock home in front in the fourth race after leading throughout. Bob Up was always in closest pursuit of the winner and proved best of the others. Coming from behind in the run home, Arab took the minor award in a drive from Miss Avondale and Poly-cron after the latter had saved much ground during the stretch drive. Displaying good speed for the entire trip, Bender First graduated from the maiden ranks when he lasted to earn the verdict after a keen stretch struggle in the first event. Disposing of Disa when entering the stretch, Bender First was doing his best at the end to stall off Clovinia, which made a bold challenge throughout the stretch. Gbl-. pris finished fast to finish a close up third. Try Come showed the way until midway in the stretch in the second race, with Harky, an outsider, in closest attendance. When the final test came, Harky drew clear and held his opponents safe at the end. Dutch Uncle began last and closed an immense gap to race into second place. Try Come saved third. Miss Frisky, the favorite, dropped out of contention in the last quarter and has apparently staled off. Another surprise developed when Mrs. V. Hoagiands Zode, little regarded, took the measure of some good sprinters in the third race, a dash of six furlongs. The High Time gelding began last, but closed up strongly during the last half mile, secured clear sailing next to the inner rail in the stretch and, after overhauling Fountain, the pacemaker, a sixteenth out, had enough in reserve to withstand the challenge of Grand Champion. After meeting with some interference on the turn for home, Al Green raced into third placa when the others tired. : " . . n L L L t T i i. r .. I g j B j" jj a
