OHIO MEETING CALLED OFF Racing1 at Hamilton Fair Grounds Comes to an Abrupt End Promoters Fail to Pay Purses and Other OtherObligations Obligations Expect Drastic Action to toPrevent Prevent Similar Fiascos HAMILTON Ohio May 8 Owing to lack of sufficient patronage and inability of those sponsoring the meeting to meet their obliga ¬ tions to the horsemen and others the racing was officially declared off at the Fair Grounds today todayThe The purse money for the last four days was left unpaid and in addition several of the horsemen had failed to draw their purse money won during the early days of the meeting Among this number was Chester Adams trainer of the S Adams stable which headed the list of winning owners during the eight days of racing racingIn In all about 8000 remains unpaid to horsemen the officials and other employes were unpaid since Friday and tHe jockeys received only the money deposited by the horsemen for their mounts since Friday be ¬ ing unable to collect the fee due for their winning mounts mountsA A recommendation is being made by the stewards here to the Ohio Racing Commis ¬ sion to issue a ruling that the horses which won during this meeting the owners of which were unable to collect their purses be not penalized The list of horses so ef ¬ fected is being prepared preparedA A pathetic scene followed the announce ¬ ment by Charles Dornette secretary of the Hamilton Jockey Club that the meeting was off A majority of the horsemen many of them just out of winter quarters were desti ¬ tute their feed bills unpaid and no funds to ship to the next racing point pointSeveral Several of those horsemen who were in more fortunate circumstances quickly made preparations to ship to Beulah Park Columbus where the spring meeting will open Saturday SaturdayJohn John Masner who acted as general man ¬ ager and Frank Bartel said to be the fi ¬ nancial backer of the venture were not present when the official announcement was made madeIt It is most probable that the Ohio Racing Commission will take action in the future to prevent any such fiascos in Ohio More care will be exercised in the granting of dates to flybynight promoters for meet ¬ ings without sufficient financial backing backingWhen When the usual time arrived a throng gathered about the mutuel plant with their uncashed tickets from the last race Satur ¬ day and from yesterday The plant was closed and deserted The racing secretary Pat Gallaher was besieged by those in possession of the winning pasteboards There was no one of authority to handle the situ ¬ ation or to pay off
