VICTORY FOR ABBOTT SILKS The Pelican Easily Outruns Sprint ¬ ers at Jamaica Course Spectators Disagree With Judges on Placing in Race Won by No Doubt Ideal Weather NEW YORK N Y May 8 The Pelican a good plater which formerly raced for Jo ¬ seph E Widener but now bears the silks of Mrs A W Abbott was winner of the best offering of the Metropolitan Jockey Club at Jamaica today It was a six fur ¬ longs dash under claiming conditions and jjiving away weight to all the other start ¬ ers the son of Haste was an easy winner William N Adrians Portden raced to sec ¬ ond place with West Main from the Ascot Stable beating Jesting for third Maxwell Howards St Stephens the only other start ¬ er ran an unaccountably bad race and was never a real contender contenderWeather Weather conditions were ideal for the sport and while The Pelican was an easy winner there were two nose finishes in the first and second race that gave the crowd a rare thrill In fact the finish in the sec ¬ ond was so close when No Doubt scored that it caused a bit of disorder when some one on the lawn boisterously disagreed with the placing placingIn In the sprint that went to The Pelican St Stephens was first to show from the stalls but he was unable to hold that po sition and at the finish of the first furlong Steffen had taken command with The Pel ¬ ican As he took the lead and drew away Steffen took hold of his mount and rated him along close to the inner rail He had abundant speed never to be threatened and he was still in hand as he crossed the line winner by four lengths Portden was second virtually all the way and as St Stephens dropped out of it early in the race Jesting moved into that position The filly for a time promised to run down Portden for second place but she was through when the stretch was reached and there West Main after saving ground on the final turn moved up strongly to take third at the heels of Portden PortdenJesting Jesting was only a neck away but she was a full eight lengths before St Stephens which was eased up in tyie stretch after be ¬ ing hopelessly out of the running C V Whitneys Synod was winner over the cheap plater juveniles in the opening race but he had to be hard driven through the stretch to earn a close decision over Mrs E A Burkes Omar Jones Well back of the first two was Gammon from the Brookmeade Stable and George D Wid eners Linchpin was a distant fourth fourthThe The only other starter was J H Louch heims Speedemup and after walking away from his stall he would not extend himself at any stage of the race and was far back of the field all the way waySammy Sammy Renick rushed Omar Jones away from his stall with such success that he opened up a lead that almost saw him safely home Linchpin for a time was in sec ¬ ond place and then came Synod and Gam ¬ mon monRobertson Robertson had Synod under slight re ¬ straint and as Linchpin tired early he moved into second place He drew up on Omar Jones but as Renick shook up his mount he held to his lead in resolute fashion In the stretch Omar Jones was still showing the way with Robertson hard at work on Synod The Whitney gelding was tiring badly but right at the end when Omar Jones faltered slightly it was Synods nose that dropped down in front Another close finish marked the second race at six furlongs when Mrs Parker Corn ings No Doubt barely outlasted the B B Stables Bride Elect In fact this finish was so close that many on the lawn did not agree with the judges placing and there was some hooting The pair was closely locked at the end and it was a hard mat ¬ ter to separate them Bride Elect lost be ¬ cause of swerving out when seventy yards from the finish Far back of the first two was Social who finished third thirdThe The disorder after the finish was such that one of the disturbers who disagreed with the judges was led off by the Pinker tons
