EQUIPOISE IS DISQUALIFIEDDESTROY CHASE ME MR KHAYYAM MOVED UP Unfortunate Incidents Mark Renewal of Metropolitan Handicap Equipoise Crosses Austin Horse HorseAfter After Taking Lead and Is Set SetBack Back Motto Scores NEW YORK N Y May 19 Equipoise the champion had his winning march halted in the running of the famous old Metropoli ¬ tan Handicap at Belmont Park Saturday and the unbeaten Chase Me broke his Jeg and was destroyed The gallant chestnut had beaten his opponents past the line after having raced outside the others on the stretch turn He had plainly proved himself best under his burden of 132 pounds but he was guilty of a stretch foul near the finish He had crossed over on Mrs James Austins Mr Khayyam which finished second and for that offense he was disqualified By the ruling of the stewards the prize went to Mr Khayyam and Willis Sharpe Kilmers Sun Archer was moved into second place with third going to W R Coes Ladysman LadysmanMrs Mrs John Bosley Jrs Chase Me un ¬ beaten up to this race was thrown broke his leg and had to be destroyed It was going to the stretch turn and while Chase Me was in a contending position that he was bumped and went down There was a general clos ¬ ing up at the time and Equipoise was racing on the outside He had come from behind Mrs Bosleys gelding and while it was im ¬ possible to fix the blame for the crowding the horses were in such a compact bunch but it was Equipoise that was on the outside outsideThe The steeplechase jockey F Slate who had the mount on the son of Purchase was unhurt by his fall fallNATURAL NATURAL DISAPPOINTMENT DISAPPOINTMENTWhile While there was natural disappointment that the Whitney horse was set back after his gallant effort it was a just decision He had palpably fouled Mr Khayyam in the stretch though he surely would have beaten him without committing the fouL As a two yearold Equipoise was disqualified in the Youthful Stakes and the race awarded to Vander Pool when the Whitney colt had won easily easilyFor For the first Saturday of the Belmont meeting the spacious course was crowded almost to capacity and the attendance was estimated at 30000 Naturally the unfor ¬ tunate conclusion of the Metropolitan and the destruction of Chase Me cast a gloom over the sport but it was spirited racing and brought memories of the most prosperous days of the turf in New York YorkThere There was a short delay at the post in the Metropolitan in which nine went to the post and while the start was a good one Good Advice and War Glory were quicker than the others to be under way and they took the lead Mr Khayyam was racing closely after these and down on the inner rail Equipoise railEquipoise leaving from No 6 stall did not get away very fast and when the field was under way he only had one horse Sun Archer headed Chase Me was also a bit slow to find his stride and he too was well back of the pace paceMR MR KHAYYAM UNDER RESTRAINT RESTRAINTGood Good Advice and War Glory held the lead m the run through the back stretch and Jones was content to rate Mr Khayyam the stablemate of Good Advice back of them Faireno was close at hand and then came Springsteel Chase Me was outfooting Equi ¬ poise but Workman had not yet asked the champion to go after the pacemaker As pacemakerAs Equipoise moved up going into the turn from the back stretch he was forced to to the outside and at the same time Slate go called on Chase Me Both were moving up gallantly and while Good Advice and Wa Glory were beginning to shorten strides Mr Khayyam was hnntrino ± was savinf was an a Chase Me MeEquipoise Equipoise at that time was i frnm f fin in rvf i and it was costinj tinued to gain and a it was evident he w it out at the finish Continued on thirtythird page EQUIPOISE IS DISQUALIFIED DESTROY CHASE ME Continued from first page One by one he put the others away and in the last furlong he only had Mr Khayyam to beat As he drew up on the son of Omar Khayyam Jones went to the whip and the fouryearold responded gamely but Equi ¬ poise was not to be denied and steadily drew alongside and was almost past when he bore over sharply and Jones was forced to take up his mount mountAfter After this interference Equipoise drew away to be past the line first by two lengths At the heels of Mr Khayyam came Sun Archer the lightweight which had closed a big gap and Ladysman was another five lengths back backIt It was a foregone conclusion that Jones would claim a foul and there was no sur ¬ prise when that was done There was also no surprise when the stewards disqualified the champion championJockey Jockey Slate stated that Chase Me broke his leg while running and that the horse pitched into the fence and that no one was responsible for the accident accidentThe The disqualification which cost Workman five days on the ground was not related to the accident at the head of the stretch Workman was in tears when he was called before the stewards and readily admitted that he could not keep Equipoise from lung ¬ ing in Jockey Mack Garner who had been engaged to ride Chase Me in the race can ¬ celled the engagement out of respect to his fellow rider Duke Bellizzi The Brook meade Stable has not started a horse in any race boyMotto since the death of the boy Motto proved herself a good juvenile when she was winner of the Fashion Stakes a four and a half furlongs sprint confined to juvenile fillies As a matter of fact it carried a greater net value to the winner than the famous old Metropolitan Handicap when it netted 4375 to C V Whitney WhitneyFollowing Following the daughter of Sir Gallahad III past the line was the Greentree Stables Peradventure and she barely beat Mrs Damon Runyons youthful winner Angelic for second place Well back of these was the consistent Hilise which races for A W Abbot AbbotTom Tom Healey brought Motto up from Pim lico with two scores to her credit and they had fitted her admirably for the Fashion Stakes She carried her weight for the race and running in 52 the performance was a good one There was some delay at the post for which Motto Marching Home and Joybird were chiefly to blame Finally Joy bird was taken to a position outside the stalls alignmentLittle and the dozen left in good alignment Little Lie did not hold her lead long as Motto raced past her and as she went to the front Sonny Workman took a slight hold of the head of the Whitney miss An ¬ gelic was racing alongside Peradventure from her slow beginning was rushed up by Coucci and was running third This was des ¬ tined to be the finish At the end Workman took no chances and rode Motto out to have her the winner by a length and a half Per ¬ adventure was steadily wearing Angelic down and just at the end she beat the daughter of Infinite by a head for second place Hilise had raced steadily in fourth place virtually all the way and that was her portion but she was three lengths away Frolic awayFrolic II the French son of Grand Fleet and Ferveure which had been away from the races since the fall of 1932 carried the silks of Miss Sara Jane Sanford to an easy victory in the Westbury Steeplechase over the short course The Greentree Stables Surf Board was second and J B Belks Springdale Rose a close third before Sema ¬ phore a stablemate of Surf Board
