HOROMETERS KINGS PLATE McLaughlin Star Continues Unbeat ¬ en Career in Old Stake Race Record Crowd Watches SeventyFifth Re ¬ newal of Woodbine Park Fixture New Track Record TORONTO OnL May 19 To the cheer ¬ ing of the greatest crowd that ever wit ¬ nessed the Kings Plate a throng estimated at between 20000 and 23000 without taking into consideration the seven or eight thou ¬ sand that lined the beach of Lake Ontario on the back stretch Horometer kept his record unblemished by adding the historic stakes to his already long list of victories In taking the seventyfifth running of the prize the McLaughlin star established a new record for the stakes when he com ¬ pleted the mile and an eighth in 1543 1543It It was the first plate triumph to fall to the lot of Mr McLaughlin Horometer which raced coupled with Pitchblende rated the shortest priced winner of the stakes re ¬ warding with the equivalent of one to twenty Following the victorious son of Hourless past the line was Speygold racing for W H Wright and which had for a run ¬ ning mate Sam Worthy Papalico the lone fouryearold in the field took third for T S Cochenour then followed the victors stablemate Candy Feast and Sam Worthy was in the rear rearAfter After a three minutes delay at the post due to the unruly action of Sam Worthy the field left in good alignment with Horo ¬ meter taking the lead at once However Mann did not hurry the gelding when Candy Feast moved up on the outside and dashed into command commandPapalico Papalico also moved up and headed the favorite Mann was content to hold third place and had the big gelding under re ¬ straint Straightening out for the run down the back stretch Horometer when called on soon took the lead Candy Feast was do ¬ ing her best a half mile from the finish and just showing the way to Sam Worthy an ¬ other that appeared spent from his early efforts effortsOn On the turn from the back stretch Horo ¬ meter began to draw away but to let him know his task was not yet finished Mann roused him once It was all that was need ¬ ed and Horometer bounded away and though Mann shook an admonishing whip at him several times near the furlong post he was not again to feel the sting of the whip drawing away steadily and still racing well within himself Papalico which had been kept under slight restraint made his move near the fivesixteenths post moved up briefly and was found wanting and Spey ¬ gold which had been taken back in the early stages moved along and after a brief duel in the stretch easily took second place placeThe The others but for their show of speed had never figured seriously and were strung out in Indian file up the stretch stretchIncidentally Incidentally when Horometer scored it was the third winner of the afternoon sad ¬ dled by trainer Giddings and also rounded out a riding double for Frank Mann and for the McLaughlin silks which were triumph ¬ ant in the initial event
