FIJI CAPTURES THE KENTUCKY OAKS Scores Easily After Dixianas Far Star Breaks Down While in Lead and but Little More Than Eighth EighthFrom From Finish Large Crowd in Attendance LOUISVILLE Ky May 19 Another of the major spring meetings terminated today when the glorious and successful nineteen days of racing at Churchill Downs was brought to a brilliant conclusion some 15000 and possibly as many as 18000 turning out for the final days sport There was a renewal of the Kentucky Oaks now sixty years old in the honor position on the program of eight races Although taken as a whole the field of threeyearold fillies that met in the feature fell below the usual standard the same interest prevailed many visitors making long trips under an almost torrid sun to attend attendThe The meeting which on Kentucky Derby Day saw the largest attendance and betting since 1930 was the most successful since the boom period Patronage and wagering for the nineteen days was 15 per cent greater than last interference much of it brought about by G Fowler who was astride Sister Zoa winner of the race marred the opener Benefited by the rough and careless manner in which Fowler rode the Four Oaks Stock Farm mare only man ¬ aged to scratch out the fluke victory by a nose both Shadow Dawn and Billies Orphan which finished second and third respectively appearing better than their nineyearold conqueror Billies Orphan was slammed around by the winner on the stretch turn while Shadowdavn had to ese up when the winner bore over bsfora drawing clear in the stretch At the end Shadowdawn was a head before Billies Orphan with Jane Hastings fourth fourthWith With Wise Time and Elwawa coming over from the outside of the field in the first six ¬ teenth and forcing all that left from posi ¬ tions nearer the rail into a sprawling stumbling mass the second race for maiden twoyearolds was of little interest and surely anything but truly run First Entry the winner had the benefit of the inter ¬ ference meted out by Elwawa and Wise Time and withstanding a drive outfinished Elwawa by a nose Wise Time was six lengths back earning third by a head over Kitty OConnell The latter and Ross vhich finished fifth not to overlook Sula and John Marcum were all but down on the track in the early jam jamJockeys Jockeys L Hale and C McCrossen re ¬ spective pilots of Wise Time and Elwawa escaped with suspensions of only ten days each eachMrs Mrs J B Partridges Ondott ridden by E Pool had no trouble winning for a big following over seven others from among the cheaper sprinters over the seven furlongs of the second race The winner moved to the front on the turn and maintaining a good brand of speed won decisively three lengths being the margin at the end where Snobful rank outsider had second place all to him ¬ self David W also at long odds defeated Lotta Airs byinches for third honors Black Fool and Pantalons failed to provide the contention many expected them to offer
