WORKMANS SPLENDID RIDE Contributing Factor in Only Ones Victory in Brookside Purse Outlasts Stand Pats Closing Hush in Aque ducts Main Race All But Eliminated Eliminatedin in the Steeplechase NEW YORK N Y June 21 Only One carrying the silks of Mrs Derring Howe was winner of the best offering of the Queens County Jockey Club at Aqueduct today when he took down the Brookside Purse at six and onehalf furlongs It was fashioned for the threeyearolds and Parker Comings Stand Pat was an easy second before If C Phipps Cleves which after the finish was worked out the full mile and a half in preparation for his Dwyer Stakes engagement Friday FridayConditions Conditions were ideal for the sport and an interesting card was enjoyed by a big crowd There were some disappointments in a bet ¬ ting way but the contests were good throughout the afternoon afternoonIn In the Brookside eleven performed and while the conditions called for threeyear olds that had not won two races it was an excellent field with Stand Pat the choice Little time was lost in the sails and as the field left Workman immediately sent Only One into the lead The son of Lucullite broke from the outside but had speed enough to soon find his way to a rail position and once safely there Workman took hold of his head and rated him along at a smart pace paceStand Stand Pat moved into second place early in the action and he was the only one that at any time threatened Mrs Howes colt Racing at the heels of the leader to the stretch Stand Pat threatened to run him down a furlong from the finish but Work ¬ man sensed the danger and he met the challenge by shaking up his mount Stand Pat was hard driven through that last fur ¬ long but Only One still had a length and a half to spare at the line Cleves in the meantime after being outrun to the stretch found his way through the field to reach fourth place in that last furlong and in the run home he disposed of Maine Chance for his share in the purse purseKoterito Koterito and Maine Chance had both shown a flash of speed to tire and Chancing ran an unaccountably dull race and had lit ¬ tle speed at any time timeOf Of the eight that went to the post in the Adamanthus Selling Steeplechase over the short course there were only two that fin ¬ ished when Mrs Gwladys Whitneys Ride away was winner over Mrs F Ambrose Clarks Hole High John Bosley Jrs Swan ¬ sea went down when a close contender three fences from the finish and at the eleventh fence Five OClock unseated Thorndyke The other casualty was when Maid of Mars went badly lame and was pulled up after having raced in the contention to the eleventh fence Mrs E A Burks Polytude under a hustling ride by Wright was a winner of the opening dash at five furlongs which engaged eleven twoyearolds M A Smith Jrs Little Wackie which raced well in hand took the lead with Ella Cyfords Foggy Dawn saving third from Masked Revue RevueThere There was considerable delay at the post when various in the field were unruly and finally First Roundup was taken to a posi ¬ tion outside the stalls before a lineup was obtained As they left Strange Times was first to be in motion while Polytude ran into instant trouble and was badly crowded back until she did not seem to have much racing chance Masked Revue soon had Strange Times headed and he was showing the way at the elbow of the course with Chilhowton in second place while Strange Times closelyThen and Little Wackie followed closely Then in the final furlong Polytude found clear racing room and she worked her way through to win going away by a length and a half Little Wackie finished strongly to take second place by a like distance before Foggy Dawn which was just up to beat the tiring Masked Revue for third thirdG G D Wideners Rosebloom was winner over the maiden juvenile fillies in the third race She took the measure of High Hand II from the Dorwood Stable which was one of the big tips of the afternoon and Cloud Sweeper from the Branncastle Farm Stable easily took third from Goron During a slight delay at the post Queens Flag attempted to run off with Don Meade but she was pulled up before she had gone far As the start came Paradise Maid left so slowly as to have little chance but the others were in close order and High Hand II from the inside stall was an early leader leaderHunter Hunter soon had Rosebloom right after the Dorwood miss and Hunter had the daughter of Chicle in hand at the turn of the course When ready Hunter sent Rose bloom into the lead and while he hustled her right along she was winner by two lengths High Hand II had saved second place by a like distance and Goron was four thingOne lengths back of the good thing One of the best finishes of the day came in the fifth race when Proud Girl which now races for the Branncastle Farm Sta ¬ ble under a powerful ride by Bobby Jones just scored over Sainted from the Ascot Stable But the best horse in the race was Mrs Frank J Hellers Propagandist He was permitted to drop far back of the conten ¬ tion and then lost several lengths by a wide turn into the stretch and suffering that handicap closed with courage courageProud Proud Girl was the one to cut out the running but Sainted was always close after her and the pair had soon opened up a lead of half a dozen lengths on the others While they were sailing along in this long lead Litzenberger was last with Propagan ¬ dist distThe The leading pair running along on the rail reached the stretch still lapped and rounding into the straight Propagandist had one horse beaten Then he went out BO badly as to lose several lengths but he continued to run over the others to reach third but he was still four lengths back of the fighting pair pairA A change of riders from L Fallen to W D Wright showed vast improvement in W E Jones Scotch Soldier which proved the easiest kind of a winner of the final race At the finish he had a big marign over Big Show while Dunfern finished fast in the stretch to be third The race completed a double for jockey Wright
